The Samsung Gallery app on Android is set to undergo a significant change, as it will soon sever its integration with Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage service. According to a support page shared by 9to5Google, this transition will take effect on September 30, 2026. After this date, users will find that the Samsung Gallery app will no longer display photos stored on OneDrive.
Despite this shift, users need not worry about losing access to their photos. They will still be available through the OneDrive Android app and the web interface. To ensure that new photos continue to be backed up to OneDrive, Samsung Galaxy users will need to configure camera backup settings within the OneDrive app itself.
Transitioning Backup Methods
Microsoft has outlined the necessary steps for users who previously relied on the Samsung Gallery to OneDrive sync feature. They will need to update their camera roll settings to maintain the backup of new photos and videos, as well as to access any existing photos already backed up via the OneDrive app.
While the OneDrive mobile app now boasts a dedicated Photos tab for managing images and memories, it may not quite measure up to the capabilities of Google Photos. The latter offers advanced search functionalities and AI-driven editing tools that enhance the user experience. Additionally, those who are already subscribed to Google One or Google AI may find themselves incentivized to switch, especially considering Google’s recent expansion of storage options. Last month, Google introduced a plan that provides 5 TB of Google Drive storage for a .99 monthly fee with a Google AI Pro subscription, an increase from the previous 2 TB offering.
