Spotify’s having major issues on Samsung and Google phones—this is why

What you need to know

Users have recently taken to Spotify’s forums to voice their frustrations, reporting that the app on their Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices is experiencing significant crashes and freezing issues. This disruption appears to be particularly pronounced when users attempt to stream music over Wi-Fi, while switching to mobile data seems to alleviate the problem.

Spotify is currently investigating a more permanent solution to these technical difficulties, as attempts to resolve the issue through app reinstallation have not yielded positive results.

On October 22, Spotify users found themselves grappling with a wave of complaints regarding app performance. A thread initiated by a moderator on Spotify’s community forum brought attention to these user-reported issues, which indicate that the app has become unresponsive on select devices from Samsung and Google. Notably, the problems seem to manifest primarily when users are connected to their home Wi-Fi networks. One user lamented, “Recently, my Spotify app has become unusable while connected to my home Wi-Fi,” specifically mentioning difficulties with their Pixel 9—a sentiment echoed by others facing similar challenges.

This is not the first time Spotify has encountered such issues; last year, following a feature rollout in June, users of the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8 devices reported widespread crashes that left their devices caught in an endless loop. Fortunately, a manual reboot provided a temporary escape from the glitch.

In light of the current situation, some users have resorted to makeshift solutions, such as disabling Spotify’s notifications or clearing the app’s cache. However, the ongoing issues have a relatively straightforward workaround—albeit a frustrating one—relying on mobile data for uninterrupted music streaming.

Earlier this year, Spotify faced a peculiar challenge when Premium users began hearing advertisements despite their subscription status. Initially thought to be a bug, Spotify confirmed the issue shortly after it was reported and promptly rolled out a fix, restoring the ad-free experience for its Premium subscribers on the same day.
