Survey shows most of you are still sideloading apps

In a notable shift earlier this spring, Google implemented new restrictions regarding the installation of applications from sources outside the Play Store. While the average user may find the requirement to wait an additional day for an APK installation to be a minor inconvenience, the change has sparked considerable concern among tech enthusiasts. A recent poll conducted by Android Authority highlights the extent of this sentiment.

Poll Insights on Sideloading Practices

The poll posed a straightforward question to its audience: Have you ever installed an Android app from outside the Play Store? Respondents were given three options: regularly, sometimes, or never. Out of 3,661 participants, an impressive 43% reported that they regularly engage in sideloading applications. This statistic underscores a significant trend among users who prefer exploring alternatives beyond the official app marketplace.

Following closely was the second-most popular response, “A few times,” with just over a third of respondents indicating that they have installed APKs from unofficial sources on multiple occasions. In contrast, only about 20% of those surveyed claimed they had never ventured outside the Play Store for app installations.

These findings align with expectations for an audience that actively engages with Android-related content. The high percentage of users who sideload apps suggests that this practice is not only common but also widely accepted among tech-savvy individuals. As the community reflects on these results, one can’t help but wonder: What was the last app you installed from outside the Play Store? Additionally, how will the upcoming sideloading restrictions impact your app installation habits? Your thoughts and experiences are welcome in the comments section.
