TikTok opens APK downloads of its Android app after Play Store removal

In the wake of a temporary ban on TikTok in the United States, the app has found a way to remain accessible to its users. Although it has been removed from the Google Play Store, TikTok is now offering direct downloads of its application as an Android Package Kit (APK), allowing users to sidestep the restrictions imposed by the app store.

When TikTok faced its brief shutdown in January, the disruption was short-lived, with the app returning to functionality within hours. However, the absence from the Google Play Store has persisted, leaving Android users unable to download the app through traditional means. A search for TikTok in the store currently yields a message indicating that the app “isn’t available.”

In response to this situation, TikTok took to Twitter/X to announce the availability of direct APK downloads for both the standard TikTok app and a new “Lite” version. This initiative aims to ensure that users without the app installed can still engage with the platform.

TikTok stated, “Since TikTok is temporarily unavailable to download in app stores in the U.S., we’re enhancing ways for you to continue using TikTok if you don’t have the app installed on your mobile device. We’ve made an Android Package Kit (APK) for TikTok and TikTok Lite available to download on Android devices. TikTok Lite is an app that offers an alternative way to experience TikTok on your mobile device, with fewer features to optimize performance and save storage. You can watch, follow, and interact with creators or create your own posts, but some features such as LIVE and TikTok Shop are not available.”

While sideloading apps can present certain security risks, TikTok emphasizes the importance of downloading the APK directly from its official website to mitigate potential issues. Users are encouraged to exercise caution and ensure they are accessing the app through legitimate channels.
