WhatsApp for Android Users Encounter PDF Opening Glitch
In recent days, WhatsApp for Android has been plagued by a perplexing bug that disrupts users’ ability to open PDF files. Instead of the familiar options such as Adobe Reader, Google Drive, or Canva appearing when a PDF is tapped, users are met with an unexpected array of choices, including wallet apps, Reddit, Google Play services, and even the phone dialer.
One frustrated user took to Reddit to share their experience, stating:
“So today out of somewhere, when I tried to open a pdf through a chat, it gave me only 3 options, Reddit, Google Play services & Google, which previously were I love Pdf, Google drive, Adobe Scan, Canva, Samsung Notes etc.”
This sentiment resonates with a growing number of users, as evidenced by numerous threads detailing similar complaints. The issue appears to be particularly selective; while some users can open PDFs received from others without a hitch, those attempting to access PDFs they have sent to themselves or others encounter the bizarre app suggestions.
One user humorously noted, “I am getting options for wallet and termux lol” while trying to review important documents. Another remarked on the absurdity of being prompted to “make the phone call with the PDF file.”
The reports have surfaced across various Android devices, including popular models from Samsung and OnePlus. Despite efforts to resolve the glitch—ranging from clearing cache to resetting app permissions—no permanent solution has emerged.
Interestingly, users have found that accessing the same PDFs through their phone’s file manager yields no issues, with all expected apps appearing as they should. This indicates that the problem lies specifically within WhatsApp’s file handling capabilities, rather than with the devices or the PDFs themselves.
As a temporary workaround, some users have discovered that sharing the PDF from WhatsApp to external apps allows them to bypass the glitch, although this is not an ideal solution. Additionally, WhatsApp Web remains functional for those needing to view documents urgently, although some users have reported scrolling issues on the web platform as well.
While WhatsApp has yet to publicly acknowledge the bug, users are encouraged to report it through the app’s settings menu. Given the widespread nature of the issue and its impact on essential functionality, a fix is anticipated in the near future.
In the meantime, users may want to utilize their phone’s file manager or share PDFs externally before attempting to open them. Alternatively, installing the WhatsApp Beta version may provide a solution, as some beta users report no issues accessing PDFs. Updates will be provided as further developments arise.
