In the evolving landscape of Android notifications, the introduction of “bubbles” is gaining traction, and WhatsApp seems poised to join the ranks of apps embracing this feature. Historically, notification bubbles, often referred to as “Chat heads,” were popularized by Meta’s Facebook Messenger, which allowed users to engage in conversations through a floating contact photo that seamlessly overlays other activities on their devices.
While this feature has its share of enthusiasts, Google has taken steps to refine the concept by integrating it natively into Android, making it accessible for a variety of applications. WhatsApp is now reportedly working on incorporating support for notification bubbles, as highlighted by WABetaInfo. Although this functionality is not yet available to the general public, early beta versions reveal a straightforward implementation that allows WhatsApp conversations to be displayed in a bubble format. This floating interface enables users to effortlessly switch between WhatsApp chats and other applications.
It’s important to note that WhatsApp’s approach differs from that of Facebook Messenger. While Messenger utilizes Android’s native bubbles on Pixel devices, it employs a semi-custom solution on other devices, which can lead to confusion as it operates separately from the standard bubble functionality used by other apps. WhatsApp, on the other hand, appears to be adopting a more cohesive approach, minimizing potential user confusion.
As the anticipation builds, there is currently no official timeline for when this feature will be rolled out to all users. However, with Android’s ongoing enhancements to the bubble feature, it seems likely that the launch is on the horizon.
