X has successfully completed the extensive rebuild of its Android app, a project that has spanned an entire year. Nikita Bier, the company’s head of product, characterizes this endeavor as “one of the largest engineering projects” undertaken since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022.
Enhanced User Experience and Future Developments
In a recent post on X, Bier shared the details of the revamped app, which has been developed “from scratch” to enhance the experience for Android mobile users. He expressed enthusiasm about the potential for X to roll out new features at an accelerated pace, stating, “Going forward, many things will hit Android first.”
Despite the significant progress, the engineering team is still addressing several outstanding features, such as the ability to host Spaces and optimizing performance for older Android devices. “There are still some rough edges,” Bier acknowledged, indicating that the journey of improvement is ongoing.
The decision to prioritize the rebuild was prompted by a notable surge in Android app downloads last year. This strategic move aligns with Musk’s vision of transforming X into an “everything app,” akin to China’s WeChat platform, particularly as the majority of global smartphone users favor Android devices.
Rebuilding Reputation Amid Challenges
The launch of the new Android app comes at a critical time for X, as the company seeks to restore its reputation following challenges such as a diminished content moderation team, an uptick in harmful content, a significant advertiser boycott, user attrition, and various national app bans.
In line with Musk’s ambitions for an all-encompassing app, X has also introduced X Chat, a private messaging service, and X Money, a digital payments platform. Additionally, to incentivize creators and brands, X has implemented measures to promote original content by reducing payouts to aggregators, clearly labeling paid partnership posts, and decluttering the main feed. A new initiative includes a million-dollar fund aimed at encouraging creators to livestream on the platform through an updated video editor.
The newly rebuilt Android app is now available for download on the Google Play Store, marking a significant milestone in X’s ongoing evolution.
