YouTube is currently experimenting with an intriguing new feature within its mobile app for Android users. This feature, known as Play something, is designed to alleviate the common dilemma of indecision when it comes to selecting content. The feature manifests as a floating action button (FAB), showcasing white text against a sleek black background, seamlessly integrated into the YouTube mobile experience. Originally, this concept was tested last year but was limited to YouTube Shorts; however, it has now evolved to encompass a broader range of video content.
Play Something FAB on YouTube
According to findings by 9to5Google, the Play something FAB has been identified in the YouTube Android app version 19.50, currently in a testing phase without an official announcement from the platform. Engaging with this option initiates a video within the YouTube Shorts interface, but it also has the capability to play standard YouTube videos. These videos are presented in a portrait layout, complete with interactive features such as options to like, dislike, comment, and share. Furthermore, once activated, a timeline scrubber appears at the bottom of the screen, enhancing user navigation. However, it’s noteworthy that the FAB will vanish when the YouTube mini-player is activated.
New YouTube Features
In addition to the FAB, YouTube has been rolling out a variety of innovative features in recent weeks, all currently in the testing phase. Among these is a new vertical scroll gesture that promises to transform user navigation and content consumption on the platform. Users can now swipe up on any video to seamlessly transition to the next one, eliminating the need to minimize to the default view. This gesture mirrors the scrolling mechanics found in YouTube Shorts, creating a more fluid viewing experience.
Moreover, YouTube has expanded its AI-driven auto-dubbing feature, which automatically transcribes and translates videos from English to various languages and vice versa. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for creators aiming to connect with a diverse audience, as it helps bridge language gaps and fosters greater engagement with viewers across different linguistic backgrounds.
