Windows 11, now a well-established operating system, has undergone numerous feature updates, with the latest version 25H2 in the pipeline. However, despite its advancements, the platform has yet to address several user-requested features that have lingered for quite some time. While the introduction of new visuals and enhanced security measures is commendable, these updates have often come at the expense of customization and functionality. Users have expressed concerns over the redesigned Start menu, the mandatory use of a local account during setup, enforced updates, and increased hardware requirements, among other issues. Features I wish were part of Windows 11
1. Control over Windows Update
While updates are essential for addressing security vulnerabilities and enhancing performance, Microsoft has a history of rolling out updates that can disrupt functionality or compatibility. Users are calling for a return to greater control over the timing and method of system updates within the “Windows Update” settings, rather than having them be mandatory. Although there are options to delay updates, users desire more granular control, including the ability to completely disable automatic updates or schedule them beyond current limitations.
2. Setup with a local account
Microsoft’s push for users to adopt Microsoft accounts during the setup of Windows 11 Home and Pro editions has been met with resistance. Users should have the clear option to set up their devices with a local account without resorting to workarounds. Providing this choice respects user privacy and autonomy from the outset. While there are methods to bypass this requirement, such as executing specific commands during the Out-of-box Experience (OOBE), a straightforward option would enhance user experience significantly.
3. Option to resize the Taskbar
The introduction of a new Taskbar in Windows 11 has eliminated the ability to change its size, a feature that many users miss. Although Microsoft has added an option for smaller icons, this only alters the icon size, not the Taskbar itself. Users would appreciate the ability to resize the Taskbar natively, allowing for a more personalized desktop experience that accommodates their preferences.
4. Relocate Taskbar to the top of the screen
Previously, users could reposition the Taskbar to the top or sides of the screen, but this flexibility has been removed in the new design. Many users express a strong desire for the option to dock the Taskbar at the top, which would align with their workflow preferences. A simple addition in the Settings app to allow this customization would go a long way in enhancing user satisfaction.
5. Full dark system mode
Although Windows 11 offers a dark mode, its implementation is inconsistent across various elements of the operating system. Users encounter inconsistencies in areas like File Explorer and the Control Panel. A comprehensive dark mode that provides visual consistency throughout the system would greatly enhance the user experience. Additionally, the return of customizable live tiles, either in the Start menu or as interactive desktop widgets, could offer users valuable glanceable information.
7. Charging limit options for laptops
To prolong battery lifespan, it is beneficial to limit the charging capacity of laptops to around 80 or 90 percent. While some manufacturers provide this feature, Windows 11 currently lacks such an option. Introducing charging limit settings would empower users to maintain their battery health and optimize the longevity of their devices.
8. Proper modern settings page for File Explorer
Despite the modern interface of File Explorer in Windows 11, its customization options remain tied to legacy Control Panel components. The third-party Files app offers a more intuitive settings interface, highlighting the need for Microsoft to revamp the File Explorer settings experience. A redesigned settings page that aligns with the overall Windows 11 aesthetic would provide users with a more cohesive and user-friendly experience.
9. Windows 11 variant for unsupported PCs
As the end of support for Windows 10 approaches, many capable devices will not meet the stringent hardware requirements for Windows 11, leading to frustration among users. To mitigate this, Microsoft should consider releasing a variant of Windows 11 tailored for older devices, similar to Windows 7 Starter. This approach would extend the life of functional computers and reduce electronic waste, providing users with a supported upgrade path.
While Microsoft has made strides in addressing some of Windows 11’s shortcomings, such as enhancing the Start menu and Taskbar, the focus has recently shifted towards AI features and new experiences. A renewed commitment to improving foundational elements of the operating system would undoubtedly resonate with users seeking a more refined and customizable experience.
