Google has officially rolled out its Cameyo Virtual App Delivery service, now accessible to enterprise customers utilizing Chrome, ChromeOS, and ChromeOS Flex. This innovative service aims to provide organizations with a contemporary approach to virtualization.
Modernizing App Delivery
Rob Beard, Google’s product manager, expressed enthusiasm about the launch, stating, “To provide today’s organizations with a more modern approach to virtualization, we are thrilled to launch Cameyo by Google, bringing a best-in-class Virtual App Delivery (VAD) solution into the Google enterprise family of products.” Beard emphasized that Cameyo is not merely a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution but rather a modern alternative tailored to bridge the gap left by legacy applications without the burdens typically associated with traditional virtual desktops.
Instead of streaming a full desktop environment, Cameyo’s VAD technology focuses on delivering only the applications users require, ensuring secure access across any device. This streamlined approach aligns with Google’s ongoing efforts to address the application gap on ChromeOS, a challenge the company has been tackling for several years.
In 2020, Google collaborated with Parallels to introduce a version of Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS for Enterprise. However, after partnering with Cameyo in 2023, Google made the strategic decision to acquire the company, integrating its team and technology into its operations.
Seamless Integration and Management
The Cameyo Virtual App Delivery service enables enterprises to stream legacy Windows and Linux applications directly within the Chrome web browser. These applications are delivered as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), allowing them to coexist effortlessly with native ChromeOS and Android applications on the desktop. This seamless user experience simplifies app distribution for enterprises, facilitating a transition to the more secure and user-friendly ChromeOS environment, including ChromeOS Flex, which can be installed on any PC.
Beard further elaborated on the flexibility of Google’s enterprise stack, stating, “Google’s enterprise stack gives you the freedom to modernize individual layers of your stack at your own pace, as it makes sense for your business — all while maintaining access to your existing technology investments.” He highlighted that this flexible stack is designed for interoperability with a wide array of modern web technologies, providing businesses with the freedom to navigate their modernization journey effectively.
Integrating AI Capabilities
Moreover, the Virtual App Delivery service opens avenues for integrating Gemini AI capabilities into legacy applications, thanks to the incorporation of Gemini within Chrome Enterprise. Google notes that “Gemini can be used to quickly summarize long reports or documents, grab key information from a video, or brainstorm ideas for a new project.” This integration allows Gemini to understand the context of a user’s tabs and recall recently opened tabs, enhancing productivity.
By merging Gemini’s capabilities with applications virtualized through Cameyo, organizations can leverage the advantages of AI to enhance their legacy applications on the web, creating a more efficient and intelligent work environment.
