Windows serves as a vital platform for over a billion users, facilitating connections, learning, gaming, and work. In a significant development, Microsoft has unveiled the Windows 11 2025 Update, also referred to as Windows 11, version 25H2. This annual feature update continues the trend of optimized delivery through advanced servicing technology.
A streamlined, lean and security-focused update
The Windows 11, version 25H2 will be rolled out as an enablement package (eKB), incorporating all the features recently introduced in Windows 11, version 24H2. Both versions share a common code base and servicing branch, which simplifies the update process. This approach ensures that users will continue to receive new features through monthly updates, aligning with Microsoft’s commitment to continuous innovation.
In line with the Microsoft Secure Future Initiative, Windows is committed to enhancing its security features. Version 25H2 boasts significant improvements in build and runtime vulnerability detection, alongside AI-assisted secure coding. The update is designed to proactively address security threats, adhering to a stringent security development lifecycle (SDL) policy. Moreover, version 25H2 has been streamlined by removing legacy features such as PowerShell 2.0 and Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC).
How to get it
The installation of Windows 11, version 25H2 will utilize servicing technology similar to that used for monthly updates, ensuring a swift and reliable experience. The rollout begins today, targeting eligible devices running Windows 11, version 24H2, particularly for users who have activated the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option. Should any potential issues arise, such as application or driver incompatibilities, a safeguard hold may be implemented, delaying the update until the concerns are resolved. The rollout will gradually expand over the coming months, with further details available on the Windows release health hub.
Information for commercial and education customers
For commercial and educational institutions, version 25H2 is now accessible through Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center. It is advisable for organizations to initiate targeted deployments to ensure compatibility with their applications, devices, and infrastructure.
This update introduces new functionalities for commercial users, including Wi-Fi 7 for enhanced enterprise connectivity. Additionally, IT administrators can now remove specific pre-installed Microsoft Store apps via Microsoft Intune or Group Policy on Enterprise and Education devices. The annual update cycle for Windows 11 continues, with new feature updates scheduled for release in the latter half of the calendar year. Importantly, this version resets the support timeline to 24 months for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. Features that were initially disabled by default in version 24H2 will be enabled by default in version 25H2, providing a more streamlined user experience.
Staying protected and productive
Users are encouraged to update their devices to the latest version of Windows 11, which brings forth enhanced features, improved security, and greater control. Microsoft will actively monitor the update process, providing timely updates on rollout status and any known issues via the Windows release health hub and @WindowsUpdate. Feedback from users is invaluable, and contributions can be made through the Feedback Hub.
