Linux Gains Ground in Steam Hardware Survey
The latest Steam hardware survey reveals that Linux has made notable strides, now accounting for over 5% of the install base. While this figure may seem modest and comes with the understanding that Valve’s data collection methods are not infallible, it represents a significant increase compared to the operating system’s performance in the early months of 2026.
According to the March survey, Linux now stands at 5.33% of the install base, reflecting a remarkable jump of 3.10% from the previous month’s figure of 2.23%. However, this upward trend is not without its fluctuations; January’s survey recorded Linux at 3.38%, while December and November saw figures of 3.58% and 3.20%, respectively. This latest data suggests a slight deviation from the previous patterns, indicating potential shifts in user preferences.
In this landscape, Linux installations surpass those of Mac, yet remain significantly lower than the overwhelming presence of Windows, which dominates with a commanding 92.33% share. This figure is further divided between Windows 11 at 66.85% and Windows 10 at 25.36%. Interestingly, this represents a slight decline from February’s 96.61% and January’s 94.62%, hinting at a possible trend where Linux could begin to carve out a more substantial niche in the market. However, it’s prudent to approach these developments with cautious optimism rather than jumping to conclusions.
The various distributions of Linux contributing to March’s 5% share are fairly evenly distributed. Leading the pack is Arch Linux, which serves as the foundation for the Steam Deck’s SteamOS, accounting for 0.34%. Following closely are Linux Mint 22.3 and Ubuntu Core 24, rounding out the top three positions.
As the Linux community celebrates this incremental progress, it might be a good moment to reach out to friends who champion Mint and Ubuntu. A light-hearted conversation about the ongoing competition with Microsoft could spark some friendly banter, perhaps leading to an invitation for a few rounds of the latest multiplayer games that have captured everyone’s attention.
