Microsoft may have a ‘gift card plan’ to stop Windows users from choosing Google Chrome over Edge – The Times of India

Microsoft is actively engaging in a promotional strategy designed to draw users to its Bing search engine while simultaneously encouraging the use of its Edge browser. Recent reports indicate that the tech giant is offering an enticing incentive of 1,300 Rewards points to Windows users, aiming to dissuade them from switching to competitors like Google Chrome.

Targeted Advertising Efforts

According to a report from Windows Latest, when users search for “Chrome” on Bing, they are met with an advertisement promoting Microsoft Edge. This ad highlights the opportunity to earn up to 1,300 Microsoft Rewards points, which can be redeemed for gift cards or donated to various non-profit organizations. The advertisement states: “Redeem your points for gift cards or donate to one of over 2 million nonprofits. Earn 1,300 Microsoft Rewards points by trying Edge.”

The Rewards points can be exchanged for tangible products through gift cards from well-known retailers such as Amazon or utilized for services like Spotify Premium. This promotional initiative appears to be quite targeted, as similar advertisements are not being displayed for other competing browsers, including Opera, Firefox, or Brave. This internal campaign reflects Microsoft’s intent to enhance the adoption of its own products.

In a statement to Windows Latest, the Browser Choice Alliance, which encompasses browsers like Google Chrome, Midori, Opera, Vivaldi, and Wavebox, corroborated the report’s findings. They accused Microsoft of incentivizing users to opt for its browser, stating: “Rather than competing on the merits and letting users decide the best browser for their needs, Microsoft is now bribing users with the promise of Microsoft Rewards points that have real cash value. Microsoft should stand on the side of users instead of expanding its campaign to undermine consumer choice and lock out competing browsers.”

Consistent Promotion of Edge

In addition to the targeted ads, Microsoft has been consistently running new advertisements for its Edge browser on Bing.com approximately every two weeks. Reports indicate that one such ad promotes Edge as a superior option, emphasizing that it utilizes the same technology as Chrome, known as Chromium. This advertisement appears when users attempt to download Chrome via Edge, reinforcing the message that all necessary features are readily available within Edge.

The ad includes a checklist that positions Edge favorably against Chrome, presenting it as the clear winner on a comparison scoreboard. For instance, it underscores the ability to earn Microsoft Rewards points when using Edge—an advantage not offered by Chrome. Moreover, it highlights access to a VPN feature, although it does not clarify that this service is powered by Cloudflare or that users cannot manually select their locations.

Furthermore, Microsoft promotes Edge’s AI personalization capabilities, allowing users to create custom browser themes using prompts, albeit with limited customization options. Overall, the campaign appears to be strategically crafted to persuade users that Edge encompasses everything they require, while emphasizing its parity with Chrome’s functionalities.
