Microsoft has unveiled a preview of its latest offering, “Windows 365 Reserve,” designed to provide users with pre-configured cloud PCs, particularly beneficial when physical devices are unavailable. In a recent post, Stefan Kinnestrand, Microsoft’s Vice President for Modern Work, elaborated on the service, which promises “instant access to a temporary, pre-configured Cloud PC when their primary device is unavailable.”
Features of Windows 365 Reserve
The “Reserve Cloud PCs” will come preloaded with essential Microsoft 365 applications, alongside users’ preferred security policies and customizations tailored to their Windows experience. This service aims to ensure that users can maintain productivity, even in the face of device loss or malfunction.
An application form for those interested in testing the service highlights several key features, including:
- Data synchronization facilitated by Microsoft’s OneDrive.
- Pre-loaded corporate applications for seamless integration.
- Management through Microsoft’s Intune endpoint management tool, where virtual machines will appear as standard PCs.
According to the details shared, Windows 365 Reserve will provide access to a Cloud PC for a total of 10 days per year, which can be utilized all at once or divided into shorter sessions. Kinnestrand emphasized the convenience of this service, stating that users can connect to their Reserve Cloud PC within minutes from any device, whether through the Windows App or a web browser.
However, the announcement did not include any information regarding the pricing structure for this service. Speculation from The Register suggests that Microsoft may opt for an upfront charge rather than a pay-as-you-go model, particularly given the service’s reliance on frequent data synchronization. The company has been contacted for further details on pricing and will provide updates if more information becomes available.
Enhanced Security Measures
In his post, Kinnestrand also revealed updates to the default security settings for Cloud PCs. These changes include:
- Disabling certain redirections, such as USB and clipboard functionalities.
- Implementing virtualization-based security to bolster protection against credential theft and kernel-level exploits.
Additionally, Microsoft is conducting a private preview of Windows 365 Cloud Apps, which allows organizations to provide secure access to individual applications hosted on Cloud PCs without the need for a dedicated Cloud PC for each user. This feature is particularly advantageous for seasonal or remote workers.
Advancements in Windows 365 Link
The post also touched on new enhancements to Windows 365 Link, the client device specifically designed for accessing Cloud PCs. A newly introduced “Connection Center” enables users to select from multiple Cloud PCs, enhancing flexibility and user experience. Improvements in multi-monitor support and the ability to log in using NFC cards further streamline the process.
While virtual PCs currently represent only about five percent of the global PC market, their adoption remains limited outside of sectors with stringent regulatory and security needs. Through these innovative initiatives, Microsoft appears poised to broaden the appeal and usage of virtual computing solutions.
