Microsoft has unveiled a series of new Windows 11 Insider Preview builds, aimed at enhancing both security and performance during the execution of batch files and CMD scripts. This update is particularly significant for IT administrators who depend on scripted workflows to streamline operations within enterprise environments.
Enhanced Security Features
In a recent announcement, Microsoft detailed how IT administrators can now activate a more secure processing mode. By adding the LockBatchFilesInUse registry value under HKEYLOCALMACHINESoftwareMicrosoftCommand Processor, batch files are safeguarded from modifications while they are running. Additionally, policy authors have the option to enable this mode through the LockBatchFilesWhenInUse application manifest control.
The Windows Insider team emphasized that this enhancement provides administrators and Application Control for Business policy authors with greater control over batch file processing. “Starting with this release, administrators may enable a more secure mode for processing batch files that ensures they do not change during execution,” they stated. This improvement not only bolsters security but also optimizes performance, especially when code integrity is enabled. Signature validation will now be required only once, rather than for each statement executed within the batch file.
Improvements to Shared Audio
In addition to the security enhancements, Microsoft has also refined the Shared Audio feature, which was introduced in October. This feature allows users to share audio across multiple devices, such as headphones, speakers, earbuds, or hearing aids. The latest update introduces individual volume sliders for each listener and device, allowing for personalized audio experiences. A new taskbar indicator has also been added, providing a visual cue during active sharing sessions and a convenient one-click shortcut to access sharing settings.
The compatibility of this feature has expanded, now supporting a wider range of Bluetooth LE Audio accessories. Notable additions include the Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 and Buds 4 Pro, Sony WF-1000XM6, and Xbox Wireless Headset, enhancing the versatility of audio sharing capabilities.
These advancements are currently being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Beta and Dev channels, available for those who have installed Windows 11 Preview Build 26220.7934 (KB5077242) and Windows 11 Preview Build 26300.7939 (KB5077243), respectively.
