Microsoft is currently developing an innovative feature for Windows 11 that aims to streamline file access directly from the taskbar. This feature, known as “File Search,” will allow users to quickly locate recently accessed and shared files or folders through a web-based interface. However, it’s important to note that this integration operates through Microsoft Edge WebView, which may influence performance and user experience.
Exploring the File Search Experience
The new File Search app boasts a user-friendly design, featuring icons for popular file types such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, alongside a prominent search bar. Users can expect a clean layout that facilitates easy navigation and quick access to essential documents.
During its testing phase, File Search will be pinned to the taskbar, enabling users to access it via a convenient flyout menu. Below the search bar, quick filters will assist in narrowing down searches to specific file types, enhancing the overall efficiency of the search process. When a search is conducted, relevant items will be displayed on the Windows 11 taskbar, complete with full names and last modified dates.
The primary goal of File Search is to simplify the retrieval of Microsoft 365 files, including those stored locally and in the cloud. Users will receive notifications when files are shared with them or when they are mentioned in documents, particularly in relation to upcoming meetings.
To facilitate these notifications, Microsoft appears to be leveraging OneDrive to track shared files and is integrating functionalities from Microsoft 365 services, including Microsoft Teams and Office applications. Users will have the option to manage these notifications through a dedicated Preferences Tab.
Features and User Control
With the introduction of File Search, users will be empowered to:
- Locate recent files
- Identify files pertinent to their work
- Access shared files
- Search for files using keywords and people
Importantly, Microsoft emphasizes user control over privacy. Only individuals can view their private files within the File Search Companion, unless they choose to share them. If files are stored in accessible locations, such as team sites, authorized team members will be able to find those files as well.
The File Search Companion will also support multiple languages, allowing users to customize their experience. Changing the language settings can be done through the Windows Settings under Time & Language.
For those who prefer not to use this feature, opting out is straightforward. Users can choose to unpin the File Search Companion app from their taskbar or completely opt out of the experience altogether.
Additional Developments on the Horizon
In addition to File Search, Microsoft is exploring further enhancements for the taskbar, including recommendations for apps, websites, and snap layouts, which are currently undergoing internal testing. Furthermore, a new People app is in the works, enabling users to manage their Outlook contacts directly from the taskbar, also utilizing Edge WebView for its functionality.
As Microsoft continues to refine these features, it remains focused on enhancing user experience and productivity within the Windows 11 ecosystem.
