OpenAI has made a significant stride in enhancing user experience with the announcement that the Codex desktop’s Computer Use feature is now accessible on Windows 11 systems. Previously exclusive to macOS, this feature allows Codex to take control of applications on a user’s computer, marking a notable expansion in its capabilities.
Enhanced Automation for Developers
The Computer Use functionality empowers Codex to utilize a virtual mouse and keyboard, enabling it to navigate the system and execute various tasks autonomously. This innovation is particularly advantageous for developers, who can leverage it to efficiently test programs, update databases, create dashboards, review projects, and troubleshoot workflows—all within a Windows environment.
Once activated, users can direct Codex by referencing their computer or specific applications in their instructions, such as @Computer or @Paint. For instance, a user might instruct Codex to “Open @Chrome and verify the checkout page still works after the latest changes.” This level of interaction simplifies complex processes and enhances productivity.
Furthermore, OpenAI has integrated this feature with its mobile applications, allowing users to initiate, review, and manage tasks on their Windows systems directly from their mobile devices. This means that Codex can continue to operate a PC seamlessly, even while users are on the move.
Currently, the Computer Use feature is available across all Codex plans, including free tiers. However, it is anticipated that access will eventually be limited to the premium plans, such as Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, ensuring that advanced functionalities are reserved for those who require them most.
