In a recent discussion, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made a striking assertion: Google reportedly profits more from the Windows operating system than Microsoft itself. During his conversation on BG2Pod, Nadella emphasized the advantages of Windows’ open architecture and its compatibility with various AI tools, including Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Anthropic’s Claude.
Market Dynamics and Browser Dominance
The landscape of web browsing is heavily tilted in favor of Google, with its Chrome browser accounting for an impressive 66% of desktop browser sessions across all platforms, according to Statcounter. When considering the 9% market share held by Safari, primarily from Mac devices, Chrome’s supremacy becomes even more pronounced.
Moreover, Google’s search engine continues to reign supreme, capturing approximately 85% of all search queries. In stark contrast, Microsoft’s Bing holds a mere 3% of the market. Additional insights from Cloudflare’s Year in Review report suggest that Google’s share may be as high as 88%, underscoring its dominant position in the search arena.
Nadella’s remarks come at a critical juncture as Microsoft navigates ongoing investigations into its business practices, which have drawn regulatory scrutiny for potential anticompetitive behavior. Interestingly, Google has also targeted Microsoft, attempting to dismantle its partnership with OpenAI, a company that has benefitted from substantial investments from Microsoft.
