Windows 11 24H2 now rolling out, here are the new features

Today marks a significant milestone for Microsoft as it unveils the Windows 11, version 24H2, also known as the Windows 11 2024 Update. This latest feature update has been gradually rolling out since May, initially targeting enterprise customers who are part of the Release Preview Channel within the Windows Insider Program for Business. By June, it became available on Copilot+ PCs, surprising many users who found it pre-installed on their devices.

John Cable, Microsoft’s VP of Windows Servicing and Delivery, shared insights about this update, stating, “Starting today, we begin to release the Windows 11 2024 Update, also referred to as Windows 11, version 24H2. This update is a full operating system (OS) swap that contains new foundational elements required to deliver transformational AI experiences and exceptional performance.” He further emphasized that this update continues the annual feature update cadence, resetting the 24-month support cycle for Home and Pro editions.

For those currently using Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, a non-security preview update from May 2024 is necessary to facilitate the transition to version 24H2.

Additionally, the update brings forth an improved Windows search that comprehends natural language, super-resolution capabilities for enhancing low-resolution images, and generative fill/erase functions in Paint to manipulate images effortlessly. Another intriguing feature, Click to Do, aims to streamline workflows by overlaying interactive suggestions on the screen, analyzing content without transmitting data to Microsoft’s servers.

Microsoft has also issued a caution that devices deemed ineligible for the update will be placed on a “safeguard hold” until any issues are resolved, typically related to incompatible software or drivers. Users are encouraged to update their drivers and software to mitigate these holds.

Furthermore, version 24H2 is now accessible through Windows Server Update Services, Windows Update for Business, and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Businesses are advised to initiate targeted rollouts to ensure compatibility with their applications, devices, and infrastructure.

This release also introduces the Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 version, tailored for specialized environments such as manufacturing and healthcare, which require extended stability.
