Hooray for the PC: Sales are up by nearly 10% on last year, but predictably things are quite a bit slower in the US

According to the latest market insights from IDC, the global PC market is experiencing a notable resurgence, with sales climbing nearly 10% year-over-year. Specifically, the third quarter of 2025 saw worldwide PC sales increase by 9.4% compared to the same period in 2024. However, the U.S. market exhibited a more modest growth of just 1%. In contrast, regions such as Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), along with Asia Pacific, reported impressive growth rates of 14% each.

Market Dynamics and Influences

A significant factor contributing to this uptick in sales is the impending end of support for Windows 10, set for October 14. This deadline is prompting many consumers to consider upgrading their systems. Additionally, the rising prominence of artificial intelligence is influencing purchasing decisions, as manufacturers are now marketing PCs as AI-ready, particularly those equipped with Microsoft’s Copilot+ AI features for Windows 11.

In total, the global PC market recorded sales of 75.9 million units in the third quarter of 2025. Leading the charge is Lenovo, which sold 19.4 million units, followed by HP with 15 million, Dell at 10.1 million, and Apple with 6.8 million units—yes, Apple computers are included in these figures. Asus rounds out the top five with 5.9 million units sold.

These five companies dominate the landscape, collectively holding over 75% of the market share. They have also been the primary beneficiaries of the sales growth, achieving an average increase of over 10%, while the remainder of the market only saw a 3% rise. This trend underscores the strength of the leading players in the PC industry, reflecting a robust demand for new technology amidst evolving consumer needs.
