Bad Brain is the latest NetEase studio to close

In a recent announcement on LinkedIn, Sean Crooks, the head of Bad Brain Game Studios, revealed that the Canadian game development company will cease operations on November 17th. This decision follows an unsuccessful search for a new publishing partner after NetEase, which established the studio, decided to discontinue its support.

Reflections on Creativity and Community

Despite the closure, Crooks expressed pride in the enthusiastic response the studio’s project garnered, attributing it to the creativity and dedication of the team. “While the outcome may not be what we had hoped for, I’ve seen firsthand that we succeeded in reaching players and peers who believed in what we were building,” he stated. He extended his gratitude to those who supported the game, emphasizing the importance of community in their journey.

As the studio prepares to close its doors, the intellectual property (IP) associated with the project is available for acquisition. Crooks highlighted that both he and NetEase are open to discussions with potential publishers or studios interested in continuing the development of the game. “We believe strongly in what was created, and would love to see this world find its way to players,” he noted.

Supporting the Team’s Future

To assist the team during this transition, Bad Brain plans to release a sizzle reel showcasing the project publicly. This initiative aims to highlight the remarkable work of the developers, artists, and storytellers involved, potentially opening doors to new opportunities for them. Crooks encouraged interested parties to reach out if they are looking for top-tier talent, stating, “We would be proud to connect you with them.”

In closing, Crooks reiterated his heartfelt appreciation for the support received throughout their journey. “Your encouragement and belief in what we were building meant the world to us,” he reflected. Although this chapter is concluding earlier than anticipated, he remains optimistic that the spirit of Bad Brain will endure through the talented individuals who contributed to its vision.
