Surface Pro update fixes key cellular bugs — just as Microsoft leans into 5G

Microsoft has rolled out a noteworthy firmware update for the Surface Pro (11th Gen), addressing several user concerns that have been on the minds of many. While firmware updates typically involve minor tweaks, this February release stands out due to its focus on enhancing connectivity and overall device reliability.

Surface Pro (11th Gen): February Firmware Update

  • Security:
    • Enhancements have been made to bolster device security, addressing potential vulnerabilities that could lead to unexpected shutdowns and privilege escalations.
  • Reliability:
    • Users can now enjoy uninterrupted productivity while utilizing a virtual private network (VPN), as the update resolves an issue that previously hindered cellular network connectivity during VPN use.
    • The update ensures that cellular settings remain consistent, fixing a bug that would revert selections from eSIM back to SIM card.
    • Video conferencing has also been improved, with fixes implemented to prevent unexpected shutdowns during Microsoft Teams calls.
    • For those who frequently dock their devices, compatibility issues with Surface Dock 2 have been addressed, ensuring full functionality.
    • Lastly, a fix for Dolby Vision videos has been introduced, eliminating the frustrating black screen error message that previously interrupted playback.

While this update is not directly linked to the recent partnership between Microsoft and Ericsson, the timing is fortuitous. The collaboration aims to enhance 5G connectivity for Surface Pro users, ensuring that they can maintain VPN access without sacrificing cellular connectivity.

Through this partnership, Microsoft and Ericsson are streamlining the setup and management of devices equipped with 5G capabilities. Features like automatic eSIM switching and remote policy management will simplify the process for IT teams. As noted by Ericsson, “Through Microsoft Intune and Ericsson Enterprise 5G Connect, IT teams can automatically enforce secure connectivity profiles and enterprise policies across every 5G-connected device, minimizing manual setup while ensuring consistent, compliant user experiences everywhere employees work.”

Looking ahead, Microsoft and Ericsson are set to introduce 5G bundles that will include Microsoft 365, Intune, and Ericsson Enterprise 5G Connect. These bundles will be available alongside Surface Copilot+ PCs, such as the Surface Laptop 7 and the Surface Pro (11th Gen).
