Microsoft has unveiled that the much-anticipated Xbox Full Screen Experience, which first graced the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds last year, will soon be accessible to all Windows 11 PCs. This announcement was made during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) today, with the new interface now officially dubbed “Xbox Mode.”
Enhanced Gaming Experience
According to Microsoft, Xbox Mode is crafted to provide a controller-optimized experience across Windows 11 devices. Players will enjoy the ability to effortlessly browse their game library, launch titles, utilize the Game Bar, and switch between applications—all while maintaining an immersive gaming environment. The interface is designed to be clean and distraction-free, allowing users to transition back to the Windows desktop whenever they choose.
The rollout of Xbox Mode is set to commence in April for Windows 11 users in select markets. Microsoft has tailored this experience for various PC form factors, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and Windows-based handhelds such as the Lenovo Legion Go and MSI Claw. Notably, the feature will disable certain background tasks to enhance gaming performance and will also support access to PC games installed from alternative platforms like Steam.
Developer Innovations
In addition to the Xbox Mode announcement, Microsoft shared several developer-focused updates at GDC. A significant highlight is the expansion of Advanced Shader Delivery on the ROG Xbox Ally, which will now be available to all game developers. This feature aims to mitigate long load times during a game’s initial launch, while also enhancing performance and reducing stuttering. Initially limited to a select number of PC games when it debuted last October, Microsoft is optimistic about broadening developer participation in the near future.
Furthermore, Microsoft is enhancing its DirectX gaming API with substantial machine learning advancements. Developers will gain access to new tools that integrate neural techniques into their graphics pipelines, enabling them to incorporate their own models directly into gameplay. This innovation promises to usher in a new era of immersive gaming experiences.
Next-Gen Developments
On the horizon, Microsoft also teased exciting developments for the next generation of Xbox consoles. Game developers can expect to receive alpha versions of Project Helix hardware by 2027. This next-gen console is set to support an impressive four generations of Xbox games, in addition to compatibility with PC games, further solidifying Microsoft’s commitment to a versatile gaming ecosystem.
