Every year, the gaming landscape sees an influx of new titles, yet a significant portion of players’ engagement, particularly on consoles, remains concentrated within the top 20 games. These dominant genres—sports, shooters, and sandbox experiences like Minecraft—capture the majority of conversations and media attention. For developers aspiring to carve out a niche, the challenge is formidable, but the PC platform appears to offer more favorable conditions for growth.
Insights from Newzoo’s Report
According to Newzoo’s recently released PC & Console Gaming Report 2026, a remarkable shift is occurring in Western markets. Over half of the total revenue generated from PC gaming now originates from titles outside the top 20. Notably, playtime for these games has surged by 44%, while engagement with the top 20 has plateaued.
When discussing games beyond the top tier, it’s essential to clarify that we’re not solely referring to niche indie projects. The PC ecosystem is characterized by its capacity to sustain long-term interest in a diverse range of titles. This is exemplified by games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Skyrim, which continue to thrive years after their initial release, thanks to ongoing sales and community-driven modifications that enhance their appeal.
Genres like survival games and action RPGs particularly benefit from this sustained engagement, as they frequently receive substantial content updates that attract new players and reinvigorate interest among existing fans.
The Console Conundrum
In contrast, the landscape for PlayStation and Xbox players presents a more complex scenario. When PlayStation users revisit older titles, they typically gravitate towards classic first-party exclusives such as God of War Ragnarök, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man 2, and The Last of Us Part 2. Meanwhile, on Xbox, games that are not part of the Game Pass library struggle to capture attention, with new free-to-play offerings accounting for less than 1% of overall playtime.
Newzoo’s findings underscore the unique advantages of the PC platform, where games can continue to generate sales long after they exit the bestseller lists. This trend explains the frequent discounts seen on platforms like Steam shortly after a game’s launch, as developers seek to maintain momentum and drive ongoing sales in a competitive market.
