Xbox Game Pass prices are going down, but future Call of Duty games won’t be added until ‘about a year’ after they launch

A week after Asha Sharma, the newly appointed head of Xbox, expressed concerns about the rising costs of Game Pass, Microsoft has made a noteworthy adjustment to its pricing structure. In a recent post on Xbox Wire, the company announced a reduction in the monthly subscription fees for its popular gaming services. Game Pass Ultimate will now be available for .99, down from .99, while PC Game Pass sees a decrease from .49 to .99. As is customary, these prices may vary by region.

While this price cut does not revert Game Pass to its pre-October 2025 levels—when Ultimate was priced at .99 and PC Game Pass at .99—it does signal a positive shift. The reduction of on Ultimate is certainly more palatable than the previous 50% increase.

Market Dynamics and Sales Impact

The decision comes on the heels of impressive sales figures for Black Ops 6, which reportedly generated 0 million in revenue due to its availability on Game Pass at launch. Notably, 82% of the game’s full-price sales in October 2025 were on PlayStation 5, where Game Pass is not offered. This highlights the substantial challenge of converting Game Pass subscriptions into significant revenue, prompting speculation that Microsoft may be recognizing a potential plateau in the service’s growth.

In response to the changes, Microsoft stated, “Our players cover a wide breadth of geographies, preferences, and tastes, so while there isn’t a single model that’s best for everyone, this change responds to a lot of feedback we’ve gotten so far. We’ll continue to listen and learn.”

The adjustments to Game Pass pricing and offerings also appear to reflect a broader strategic shift following the departure of former Xbox president Sarah Bond in February. Under her leadership, the “everything is an Xbox” strategy was developed, but Sharma’s recent commitments to “recommit to our core Xbox fans and players” suggest a potential pivot in direction. A month after her appointment, it seems that the previous strategy may be evolving.
