Valve breaks down the issues causing Steam Machine launch delay

Valve’s Steam Machine Faces Delays Amid Supply Chain Challenges

Valve’s highly anticipated Steam Machine, a compact gaming PC designed to run on SteamOS, was initially scheduled for an early 2026 release. This innovative little black cube has been in the works since 2013, but it is only now that Valve feels equipped with the necessary software and hardware to bring it to market. However, as the projected launch date has come and gone, the company finds itself grappling with multiple delays.

Lawrence Yang, a UX designer at Valve who previously contributed to the Steam Deck and is now focused on the Steam Machine, expressed the team’s disappointment regarding the current situation. “I mean, obviously, we’re bummed that this is the state of things,” he remarked. “At the very least, we’re not the only ones in this boat. Everyone’s kind of figuring out how to overcome these obstacles and challenges—RAM shortages, memory shortages, price hikes, everything.”

Yang elaborated on the impact of these supply chain issues, stating, “It’s unavoidable that it will impact basically anything we make that has any of those parts in them. We’re doing our best to make sure that we can make the product still available at as good and competitive a price as we can. It’s challenging for sure.”

The ongoing shortages of RAM and SSDs are the primary culprits behind the delay, a challenge that Valve has already faced this year. In February, the company added a note to its Steam Deck store page, warning customers that the OLED version of the handheld console might be out of stock due to similar supply constraints. The demand from AI data centers continues to consume available RAM and SSD resources, with no signs of a slowdown in sight.

Despite these hurdles, there remains a glimmer of hope for eager gamers. Recent rumors suggest that Valve warehouses have received a significant shipment of game consoles, leading to speculation that a full launch of the Steam Machine could occur this summer.

The Steam Machine is just one of three hardware launches Valve has planned for the year. Following the successful introduction of the Steam Controller, which has quickly become an essential tool for PC gamers, the company is also gearing up for the anticipated release of the Steam Frame VR headset later this year.
