Star Wars: The Old Republic’s original director hadn’t played a single MMO before launching its development studio: ‘How the hell did they trust me with this much money?’

In a recent interview, James Ohlen, a veteran of BioWare, shared insights into the development of the iconic MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is currently managed by Broadsword. Ohlen, who was appointed to oversee a new office in Austin, Texas, in 2006, candidly admitted that he had never played a game in the MMO genre prior to taking on this ambitious project. This revelation highlights the unique journey that led to the creation of a title that would become a significant part of the Star Wars gaming universe.

Reflections on Development

During the conversation, Ohlen expressed his regrets regarding the game’s initial launch, which faced numerous challenges. The team had crafted an impressive 200 hours of content, spread across eight origin stories. However, in retrospect, Ohlen believes that a more focused approach would have served the game better. He suggested that a condensed experience of around 60 hours with fewer, more substantial origin stories would have enhanced the overall quality. “I wanted it to be Knights of the Old Republic online, but in the end, it felt more like ‘WoW in space,'” he remarked.

Ohlen elaborated on the difficulties of managing such a vast amount of content, noting that the sheer volume often led to a decline in quality. “When you’re doing that much content, the quality starts going down. You have to start depending upon rules instead of creativity, and the content got more vanilla,” he explained. His vision for a more streamlined narrative could have potentially transformed the player experience.

A Bold Vision Denied

In a twist of fate, Ohlen revealed his ambitious plan to relaunch the game under the title Star Wars: The New Republic. Despite receiving support from EA executive Patrick Söderlund, the proposal was ultimately rejected by EA’s board. Ohlen recounted, “The big challenge was Patrick Söderlund, who hates Star Wars: The Old Republic. And I convinced him … it was one of the greatest accomplishments of my career.” However, the board’s memories of the costly launch—reportedly around 0 million—led them to question additional investment in the franchise.

This setback marked what Ohlen described as the “beginning of the end” of his tenure at BioWare. Despite the rocky start, The Old Republic has demonstrated remarkable longevity, maintaining a dedicated fan base over the years. EA disclosed that by 2019, the game had generated nearly billion in revenue, a testament to its enduring appeal.

A New Chapter

In 2019, Ohlen co-founded Archetype Entertainment, the studio behind the sci-fi RPG Exodus. However, he made the difficult decision to leave in December 2025, citing personal health and well-being as primary reasons for his departure. “I was running on fumes, and it was hurting my health, and my personal life, and everything. I just need to step away,” he stated, reflecting on the toll that the demanding industry can take on individuals.
