“Agents are only as good as the context we give them”: Microsoft IQ connects AI agents to your workspace data and the web

AI Agents have emerged as a focal point at this year’s Build conference, showcasing significant advancements that promise to reshape user interactions with technology. Enhancements to Windows 11 now allow these agents to operate within secure sandboxes, ensuring that the integrity of the operating system remains intact while users benefit from their capabilities. Notably, Microsoft’s recent launch of the Surface Laptop Ultra prominently featured these AI agents, underscoring their growing importance in the company’s ecosystem.

Among the most exciting developments is Microsoft IQ, a new contextual framework designed to ground AI agents in both general knowledge and enterprise-specific data. This innovative layer was highlighted during Build, emphasizing its potential to deliver tailored results by synthesizing internal knowledge with information sourced from the web.

Microsoft IQ Components

Microsoft IQ comprises four integral components:

  • Work IQ: This component captures activities across Microsoft 365, organizational systems, and external data sources.
  • Fabric IQ: It provides a cohesive semantic foundation for business data, enhancing interoperability.
  • Foundry IQ: This element connects disparate data points, enabling retrieval of information from both enterprise knowledge and the broader web.
  • Web IQ: An AI-first web search stack that claims to deliver relevant results 2.5 times faster than its closest competitors.

The Work IQ APIs are set to become generally available on June 16, further expanding the capabilities of AI agents within the Microsoft ecosystem.

Additionally, Microsoft introduced Scout at Build, a personal work agent currently in preview for Frontier customers. Built on the foundations of OpenClaw and Work IQ, Scout integrates seamlessly with Teams, Outlook, and other tools. According to Microsoft, Scout is designed to understand individual work patterns, proactively managing tasks such as meeting preparations and scheduling conflicts based on user preferences.
