Google shares updated timeline for rolling out Android developer verification

In the evolving landscape of mobile applications, several key players are making strides in enhancing their app distribution platforms. Notable among them are:

  • Google with its Google Play
  • Honor through the HONOR App Market
  • OPlus, featuring the OPPO App Market
  • Samsung’s Galaxy Store
  • Transsion’s Palm Store
  • vivo’s V-Appstore
  • Xiaomi’s GetApps

To streamline the developer experience, Google is set to introduce new APIs aimed at simplifying the registration process for external developers. Among these innovations is the forthcoming Android Developer ID Status API, which will allow developers to verify if a package name is already in use. Additionally, the Android Developer Console API will facilitate the registration and management of app package names directly within the developer’s environment, enhancing efficiency.

The countdown begins

This month marks a significant milestone as Google prepares to implement a new system service across most certified devices. The package, identified as com.google.android.verifier, will be integrated into smartphones and tablets operating on Android 8 or later. This service will empower Google to restrict the installation of unverified applications, although it will remain inactive until verification is launched in specific regions.

Looking ahead, July will see the rollout of new developer APIs, alongside the initiation of testing for “limited distribution” accounts. This initiative is designed for hobbyists eager to create and share their applications with a select audience. Notably, these limited accounts will not incur any fees or require government ID verification, allowing installations on up to 20 devices.

By August, the advanced flow for app verification will be globally accessible, paving the way for a phased approach to mandatory verification in initial markets. As previously outlined, this advanced flow will permit users to bypass verification, albeit through a complex process that involves navigating to a hidden menu, acknowledging the associated risks multiple times, and enduring a 24-hour waiting period before finalizing the installation.

September will usher in a new era for Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, as they begin to verify app installation status. However, the path forward remains uncertain. Google is expected to closely observe the implications of this verification process as millions of users transition to a landscape dominated by verified applications. The tech giant has indicated plans to expand developer verification by 2027, with aspirations of establishing it as a global policy for devices.
