Banking Apps, No Google, and a Locked Bootloader: How iodé Makes Privacy Android Work for Everyone

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to engage in a conversation with Brian from iodé, a project dedicated to creating a de-Googled Android experience. Our discussion revolved around the project’s achievements and the challenges that lie ahead. Initially intended to be a video/audio format, we transitioned to our usual text format due to some audio quality issues. Here’s a glimpse into our conversation.

Understanding iodé’s Mission

Brian: At iodé, our primary aim is to provide a user-friendly Android distribution that prioritizes privacy. We want everyday users to feel comfortable and secure while using their devices. A key feature of our platform is a tracker blocker that acts as a firewall, allowing users to see and control the connections their apps and browsers make. This helps prevent ads and trackers from following users around the internet. While we are not a traditional Linux device, we offer all the usability of an Android device with enhanced privacy features.

Addressing App Compatibility Concerns

Brian: One of the main concerns for users considering a de-Googled phone is app compatibility, especially for banking applications and other services typically accessed via the Google Play Store. To address this, we provide two app stores: F-Droid, which is a free software app store, and Aurora Store, a front end for Google Play that allows users to download apps without Google tracking their activity. Users can even spoof different devices to access apps that may not be available for their specific device, ensuring a seamless experience. Additionally, all pre-installed apps can be uninstalled, giving users the freedom to choose their preferred app stores.

Day-to-Day Experience for Non-Technical Users

Brian: If a non-technical user were to switch to iodé, their experience would largely depend on the apps they use. While some banking apps may encounter issues due to Google’s Play Integrity API, most common applications like Instagram and TikTok function as expected. Users will notice a significant reduction in notifications and advertisements, as iodé is designed to minimize bloatware and unwanted distractions that often accompany standard Android distributions.

Commitment to Sustainability

Brian: Sustainability is a core value at iodé. We encourage the use of refurbished devices, including Fairphones, as our minimalistic operating system can run efficiently on older hardware. By reducing unnecessary software, we help extend the life of devices that might otherwise be discarded. While we initially focused on ethical manufacturers like Shift and Fairphone, we are now expanding our offerings to include new devices in response to customer demand. Our goal is to promote a sustainable model that considers the entire supply chain and the ethical implications of smartphone production.

Collaboration in the Privacy Android Space

Brian: The privacy-focused Android landscape is not overly crowded, with notable players like /e/OS, LineageOS, and GrapheneOS. I view these projects as part of a broader community rather than competitors. The market for de-Googled devices is limited, and collaboration among projects can only strengthen our collective efforts. We aim to respect locked bootloaders, which distinguishes us from other projects, and we are working towards a unified solution for Google Play Integrity challenges.

Addressing Criticism and Security Concerns

Brian: While GrapheneOS has expressed criticism regarding our project, we believe that our approach caters to users who seek alternatives beyond Pixel devices. We support end-of-life devices, recognizing that many users rely on them despite inherent security risks. Our commitment is to provide updates and support for these devices while balancing the need for security and usability. We also strive to expand our support to a wider range of devices beyond just Google Pixels.

Understanding User Adoption

Brian: Without tracking our users, gauging adoption rates can be challenging. However, we estimate that over 10,000 individuals are currently using iodé as their daily driver, with downloads increasing significantly over the past year. Our user base spans various countries, including the United States, Germany, and France, although we do not sell devices in the U.S. We maintain user privacy by not retaining any personal information, focusing instead on general statistics regarding downloads.

Why Choose iodé?

Brian: When considering iodé against other privacy-focused Android options, our integrated tracker blocker and monthly security updates stand out. With support for over 60 devices, users can enjoy a suite of pre-installed apps that are fully uninstallable. Our base is built on Lineage, enhanced with additional privacy features, ensuring users receive a superior experience compared to standard Android distributions. For those who prioritize privacy without sacrificing usability, iodé offers a compelling choice.

I extend my gratitude to Brian for sharing valuable insights about the iodé project. For those intrigued, exploring iodé could lead to your next smartphone experience.
