Overwatch’s Steam reviews creep up to “mixed” as playercount surges

Ah, Overwatch, what are you up to now? Apart from cosmetic prices that give my wallet the shakes, it seems that Blizzard Entertainment’s shooter is having a bit of a moment again, at least on Steam. Between new heroes like Shion and an upcoming YOASOBI collaboration, there’s enough there to certainly get me to redownload it. However, despite Blizzard’s best efforts, players are dealing quite a beating to the game’s overall reception on the Steam Marketplace.

Current Reception and Player Sentiment

It isn’t uncommon to see new PC games or existing titles undergo a cultural shift on Steam. This phenomenon is particularly evident in the FPS genre, where even titans like Call of Duty are not immune to the voices of disgruntled players. Remember when the launch of Warzone 2 faced immediate backlash? Well, Overwatch is still feeling that same wrath, as it currently holds a “mixed” rating in recent reviews.

To be fair, this is actually an improvement. Before Overwatch 2 rebranded itself to simply Overwatch, reviews on Steam languished in the “mostly negative” range. Out of over 7,000 recent additions and 136,000 reviews left in English, Overwatch is slowly creeping back up. However, a glance at player feedback reveals a different story. As expected, much of the criticism is directed at Blizzard’s aggressive microtransactions.

One particularly vocal player described Blizzard as a “greedy trash company,” lamenting the exorbitant prices for in-game bundles. With some items priced at 0, such as the Overwatch Nyan Cafe Ultra skins, it’s hard to argue against that sentiment. Do you have 0 / £84.99 spare to deck yourself out for your next skirmish in the arena?

Player Engagement and Future Prospects

As the new Overwatch season unfolds, a steady stream of teams is heading into battle. According to Steam Charts, Overwatch recently peaked at just over 74,000 players in a 24-hour period. While that number has since dipped to around 66,000, it still represents a solid foundation. For comparison, June saw one of the highest peaks yet, with over 102,000 players logging in. Although it’s not quite near the all-time high of 164,636, it’s a promising start.

Considering that player numbers hovered between 45,000 and 50,000 from January 2025 to January 2026, with occasional spikes into the 60,000 range, this uptick is noteworthy. Whether Blizzard can maintain this momentum remains to be seen, and the upcoming Overwatch events will play a crucial role in keeping players engaged.
