LineageOS has unveiled its latest “Summertime updates,” a collection of enhancements that promise to elevate the user experience significantly. Among the most notable features is a new browser-based flashing tool, which allows users to install LineageOS directly from their web browsers. This innovative tool is accessible via the project’s download portal and supports various installation methods, including Fastboot, ADB, and Samsung’s Odin protocol. What’s new in LineageOS?
The Updater app has also received a comprehensive redesign, now sporting a fresh Material 3 Expressive aesthetic. This visual overhaul comes with practical improvements, such as displaying the Android Security Bulletin (ASB) level associated with each update prior to installation. This feature allows users to easily ascertain which security patches are included in their updates. Additionally, LineageOS has optimized the update process by enabling A/B OTA packages to be streamed by default, which not only reduces the storage space needed for updates but also accelerates the installation process.
On the software side, LineageOS has adapted to Google’s new Android 16 security patching model, consolidating most security fixes into quarterly releases. The development team remains committed to testing and integrating monthly security patches for current LineageOS versions while also backporting fixes to several older branches whenever feasible.
Looking ahead, the developers have confirmed that work on LineageOS 24 has commenced, following the release of Google’s Android 17. While a specific release timeline has yet to be disclosed, the team assures users that development is progressing smoothly.
In addition to these significant updates, several bundled applications have also been enhanced. The default Gallery app now features support for Motion Photos, double-tap video seeking, and the ability to resume video playback from the last watched point. Other applications, including Seedvault, Etar Calendar, and the Twelve music player, have also received updates to improve functionality.
