Generative AI’s role in gaming is stirring a complex dialogue among players, particularly within the PC gaming community. A recent poll conducted by GameDiscoverCo reveals a notable skepticism regarding AI disclosures on Steam, highlighting a nuanced landscape of player sentiment. While some gamers are open to the idea of AI integration, a significant portion remains wary, particularly when it comes to the transparency of developers.
Are PC gamers OK with AI, and do they trust devs to tell us about it?
The survey, which gathered insights from nearly 3,800 Steam users between June 25 and July 2, 2026, indicates that 43% of respondents are comfortable purchasing games that include an AI disclosure. In contrast, 31% expressed a negative view towards such disclosures, with 8% outright refusing to buy games that feature them. This data suggests that while AI is not entirely unwelcome, it raises substantial concerns for many players.
Attention to AI disclosures appears to be quite high among gamers. Approximately 44% of participants reported reading these disclosures in detail, while another 45% at least glance at them. Only 11% indicated they do not engage with this information at all. This means that for nearly 89% of respondents, the AI disclosure section plays a role in their purchasing decisions, underscoring its importance in the gaming marketplace.
However, trust in the accuracy of these disclosures is markedly low. Only 17% of respondents believe that developers fully disclose all aspects of AI use in their games. A further 25% think that many developers are transparent, while 35% feel that only some developers provide accurate information. Alarmingly, 16% believe that not many developers disclose AI use, and 4% think that virtually none do. The predominant sentiment leans towards skepticism, indicating a significant trust gap between players and developers regarding AI transparency.
The survey also delved into opinions on AI-assisted development tools, such as coding helpers like Claude Code. Although Steam does not currently mandate the disclosure of AI tools used for efficiency, 56% of respondents believe that such tools should be disclosed. Only 8% disagreed, while 37% remained neutral or indifferent. This suggests a strong desire among players for greater transparency, even concerning the behind-the-scenes tools that aid in game development.
As Steam continues to encourage developers to disclose AI usage, many gamers suspect that not all are being completely forthcoming. Misrepresentation to Valve could lead to serious repercussions, including delisting or account closure. Notably, nearly 20% of games featured in Steam’s recent Next Fest event carried a generative AI warning, a figure likely to rise as the industry evolves, especially in light of recent layoffs at major companies like Xbox.
