A disturbing ’90s point-and-click horror game about waking up in a rundown asylum with no recollection of who you are is getting a glow up in 2026

1998 marked a significant milestone in the realm of PC gaming, with iconic titles such as Half-Life, Unreal, StarCraft, Thief, and Baldur’s Gate gracing the market. The console landscape was equally vibrant, featuring Nintendo 64 classics like Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Kazooie, alongside PlayStation heavyweights such as Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil 2. Amidst this illustrious lineup, a lesser-known gem, Sanitarium, made its debut in April 1998, quietly entering the scene.

The Unforgettable Journey of Max

Sanitarium is an isometric point-and-click adventure that follows the story of Max, an amnesiac who awakens in a peculiar and dilapidated sanitarium. However, to categorize this game merely as an exploration of a slightly unsettling hospital would be a disservice; it ventures into far more profound territories. For those who have experienced it, especially outside the context of the mid-’90s, the game elicits a fervent appreciation. It masterfully balances elements of camp with psychologically intense themes, all while presenting a visually stunning array of isometric environments.

Recently, I acquired Sanitarium on Steam for a modest price, only to discover that a new version, Sanitarium Enhanced, is set to be released by Ziggurat. This updated edition promises a series of thoughtful enhancements, including:

  • Widescreen support during gameplay, extending beyond cutscenes.
  • Controller support for a more versatile gaming experience.
  • An extras gallery featuring behind-the-scenes content and cut material.
  • A new optional hint mode designed to assist modern players in navigating the game without the frustration of trial-and-error interactions.
  • Fixes for a variety of legacy bugs and issues.

Additionally, optimizations for the Steam Deck are included, although the original version of Sanitarium already functions well with trackpads. For those who prefer a more traditional control scheme, this new iteration will also be available on Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles, slated for release sometime in 2026.
