Fable director says they aren’t ‘scared of other big games’ except one—it’s GTA 6, in case you were living under a rock

In the ever-evolving landscape of video game releases, the anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 has sent ripples through the industry, prompting studios to strategically navigate their launch schedules. This phenomenon resembles a whimsical scene where a multitude of Marios—perhaps best described as a ‘mama mia’ of Marios—attempt to evade a formidable whomp.

Fable’s Strategic Delay

The recent decision to postpone the launch of the new Fable game to 2027 exemplifies this trend. Xbox, while initially tight-lipped about the reasons behind this shift, has now provided a light-hearted yet clear indication that the looming presence of Grand Theft Auto 6 played a significant role. During an interview with IGN at Gamescom 2026, Fable’s director, Ralph Fulton, candidly shared his thoughts on the matter.

“I think the rationale behind moving us out of October, the date that we were in previously, is pretty apparent to everybody,” Fulton remarked. “I feel great about that. I mean, I was really looking forward to shipping this game this year. I didn’t want to have to do another January 1 speech to the team about ‘this is the year we ship Fable,’ which I’m now going to have to do.”

Despite the disappointment of a delayed launch, Fulton expressed satisfaction with the decision, acknowledging the chaotic nature of the upcoming release window. This period is not solely defined by Grand Theft Auto 6; it also features a robust lineup of titles, including Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Blood of Dawnwalker, two Star Wars games, Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day, and Phantom Blade Zero—all set to debut before the year concludes.

However, Fulton did not shy away from admitting that the primary concern was indeed the heavyweight contender: “We don’t run scared of other big games. We’re a big game ourselves. We hold ourselves to high standards. I’m happy to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games. There’s just one that I’m happy to avoid entirely.” This sentiment encapsulates the delicate balance studios must strike between ambition and strategy in a competitive market.
