Microsoft Edge continues to evolve, introducing new features while bidding farewell to some familiar ones. The latest update brings a notable enhancement: users can now sign in to the browser using their Apple accounts, expanding accessibility for those who prefer Apple’s ecosystem. This feature is available on both Windows and macOS devices, with administrators having the ability to manage its availability through specific policies.
New Features and Retirements
In addition to the Apple account integration, Edge has rolled out a feature designed to bolster user security by automatically unsubscribing individuals from notifications originating from scam or malicious sites. When a notification leads to a page blocked by Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, Edge will prevent further notifications from that source, ensuring users are informed of this action. They can review and restore any blocked sites at their convenience through the browser’s settings.
However, not all changes are positive. The update also marks the retirement of several features, including the much-loved Edge Drop, which allowed users to send messages, files, and photos to themselves in a single thread. This feature, powered by OneDrive, made it easy to access content, but its presence in the sidebar led to competition with the newly introduced Copilot feature, which may have contributed to its discontinuation.
Another feature being phased out is the real-time video translation capability, which is being gradually retired. Users may notice varying availability during this transition, as Microsoft streamlines its offerings.
On a brighter note, the update introduces an enhanced key icon in the address bar, allowing users to easily access saved credentials. This feature enables users to view detailed information about their logins, including the ability to copy usernames and passwords, as well as add personal notes related to each account, all without navigating away from the current page.
Additional updates include the introduction of a new Copilot Cowork policy, which allows for various automated tasks within the browser, and clarifications regarding the DowngradeVersion policy for WebView2, giving administrators more control over application versions. The LocalNetworkAccessRestrictionsTemporaryOptOut policy is also set for removal in a future update, with the timeline adjusted to align with upcoming Edge versions.
