Microsoft acknowledges Bluetooth on Windows 11 is a hot mess, begins testing nine major fixes

Bluetooth connectivity on Windows has long been a source of frustration for users, often characterized by erratic connections and the occasional disappearance of devices. Microsoft has acknowledged these challenges and is taking significant steps to enhance the Bluetooth experience with a recent update.

Today, Microsoft introduced update 26200.9539 to testers in the Release Preview Channel of the Insider Program, featuring up to nine significant fixes aimed at improving Bluetooth functionality. This update is noteworthy, as substantial bug fixes for Bluetooth have been infrequent in Windows 11’s changelogs over the past five years.

Better calling experience with Bluetooth on Windows 11

One of the standout improvements is the enhanced calling experience for users of Bluetooth headsets during virtual meetings, whether on platforms like Teams or Google Meet. Users will now find that adjusting the volume on their Bluetooth headset prompts a built-in volume flyout from Windows, providing improved visual feedback on the new volume level. This enhancement is part of a broader initiative to bolster reliability and user experience across various applications, including Teams, Google Meet, WhatsApp, and Telegram.

Furthermore, the update enhances the stability of the Bluetooth & devices page within Settings, streamlining the management of Bluetooth and audio devices. A notable change also addresses microphone compatibility issues for certain PCs utilizing Bluetooth Classic Audio accessories. Additionally, it resolves a bug that could cause the Bluetooth radio to turn off despite appearing enabled in the settings.

For users equipped with newer Bluetooth headsets featuring LE Audio, performance and reliability are set to improve significantly. While Microsoft has not disclosed the specific mechanisms behind these enhancements, users can anticipate:

Microsoft says Windows 11’s driver quality will improve significantly

In May 2026, Microsoft convened OEMs and hardware partners at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) to address the stability of the operating system and the critical role that drivers play in this regard. The discussions centered on fostering collaboration to enhance the overall ecosystem and improve quality standards.

Microsoft emphasized that the reliability of Windows cannot be achieved if drivers are poorly constructed. As Bluetooth functionality improves, the underlying driver quality remains crucial for achieving what Microsoft terms “improved reliability.”

The company has initiated the Driver Quality Initiative (DQI), which aims to enhance driver trustworthiness, phase out outdated or low-quality drivers that lead to compatibility issues, and bolster the security and reliability of updates delivered through Windows Update. This initiative targets improvements in crashes, performance, and battery life.

Syam Poluri, Distinguished Engineer at Dell Technologies, remarked on the importance of collaboration among OEMs, ODMs, silicon partners, and independent hardware vendors (IHVs) to deliver high-quality solutions for customers. Microsoft reiterated that when drivers are of high quality, users experience reliable and secure devices. Conversely, driver failures can lead to perceptions of device malfunctions, regardless of the actual source of the issue.

With the DQI, Microsoft is investing in strengthening kernel-mode drivers and transitioning more third-party kernel-mode drivers to user-mode drivers or Microsoft-authored class drivers, aiming to enhance security, reliability, and resilience by minimizing the reliance on third-party driver code within the Windows environment.

Additionally, Microsoft is streamlining Windows Update by deprecating outdated or low-quality drivers and has begun rejecting problematic driver files during the signing process to prevent their publication through Windows Update. The focus will not only be on crashes but also on stability, functionality, performance, power, and thermal impact.

While many of these driver-related enhancements are still under development, further details are expected to emerge later this year.
