The 13-inch Microsoft Surface Pro 12th Edition marks a significant milestone as the first model to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2. Our review unit, equipped with the X2 Plus, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD, was put through its paces with a variety of tasks, from gaming to graphic design in Photoshop, and even running applications that typically challenge ARM devices.
Software and Compatibility: What Runs and What Doesn’t
Software compatibility is often the first concern when discussing Snapdragon-powered Surfaces. This model runs Windows 11 Home in its ARM variant, which utilizes a different processor architecture than the x86 systems from Intel and AMD. Consequently, applications must either be specifically compiled for ARM or translated on the fly by Windows.
Fortunately, there have been notable advancements in this area. We successfully installed and used Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro without any significant issues. This is a far cry from the early days of the Surface Pro with an ARM chip, where Photoshop was nearly unusable. Now, both applications run natively, thanks to the availability of proper ARM versions. Other software like After Effects, Audition, and Media Encoder have also made the leap to native performance.
However, some limitations remain. For instance, Premiere Pro lacks certain features, including support for RAW video formats, and while video editing is feasible, it doesn’t quite match the smoothness of a MacBook Pro with an M chip. Export times can also be significantly longer. Additionally, older games may require some manual intervention; for example, we had to download the .NET Framework 3.5 to get Hotline Miami running smoothly.
Hardware and Performance
The Surface Pro comes in two configurations. Our review unit features the Snapdragon X2 Plus with 10 cores and an Adreno X2-45 GPU, paired with an LCD display. The higher-end variant boasts the X2 Elite with 12 cores and a more powerful Adreno X2-85, and it can be equipped with an OLED panel. Our configuration, with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD, performs admirably, though it still doesn’t quite reach the level of a MacBook Pro with an M5 chip for video editing tasks.
Benchmark results indicate that the new Surface Pro outperforms its predecessor in Geekbench 6, particularly when compared to the older 12-inch model still available from Microsoft. In terms of gaming performance, the Surface Pro excels in certain titles, such as Solar Bay, where it outshines competitors. However, in more demanding scenarios like Wild Life Extreme, it struggles to keep pace with its predecessor.
A standout feature is the easily swappable SSD, a welcome addition given the current high memory prices. While the standard 256 GB may feel limiting, opting for at least 512 GB is advisable.
It’s worth noting that the Surface Pro can become quite warm during intensive tasks, prompting the fans to activate. However, it generally operates quietly during regular use.
Gaming Test
While the Surface Pro shows promise in benchmarks, the gaming experience is somewhat underwhelming. On a positive note, Hotline Miami runs smoothly, hitting the 60 Hz cap, although it occasionally stutters due to emulation. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim performs better than anticipated, achieving 24 FPS at native resolution with maxed-out settings, and a stable 60 FPS at Full HD with lower settings.
Conversely, Counter-Strike 2 proves disappointing. Even at lower settings, the game struggles to maintain playable frame rates, which is particularly concerning for competitive gameplay. Given these limitations, the Surface Pro is not tailored for gamers; alternatives like an iPad or dedicated gaming laptop may be more suitable.
Display and Speakers
The model we reviewed features a 13-inch PixelSense LCD with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,920 pixels, offering a pixel density of 267 ppi in a 3:2 aspect ratio. The display refresh rate is dynamic, ranging from 24 Hz to 120 Hz, optimizing power consumption. With a brightness level of 600 nits, it performs well outdoors, although it may not match the brightness of an iPad Pro.
While the LCD is impressive, the OLED version offers superior black levels and HDR performance, peaking at 900 nits. Nonetheless, the LCD is a solid choice for users who prioritize quality without the need for OLED.
The audio experience is commendable, featuring stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. Whether watching movies or listening to music, the Surface Pro delivers a satisfying sound quality, making it a great companion for business trips.
Design, Build and Ports
The build quality of the Surface Pro is exceptional, showcasing a premium aluminum body and a design consistent with previous generations. Available in three colors—Platinum, Black, and a new Sand variant—the tablet weighs 895 grams and measures 9.3 millimeters thick. The signature kickstand remains, offering excellent adjustability.
Connectivity options include two USB-C ports with USB4 and DisplayPort capabilities, allowing support for up to three 4K monitors. However, the absence of USB-A, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a microSD slot is a notable drawback. On the upside, the SSD can be easily replaced.
For security, the device features an IR scanner for face recognition, which operates effectively. The front camera captures 1440p video, though some users may find the color representation slightly washed out.
Keyboard and Pen
The Surface Pro offers three keyboard options, including a model with pen storage and a detachable Flex Keyboard. The standard keyboard is highly regarded for its typing experience, providing a surprisingly comfortable feel despite shorter key travel. The touchpad is equally impressive, enhancing productivity.
The Slim Pen 2, which charges via the keyboard cover, is included in some bundles. While its flat design may not be the most comfortable, it performs well in applications like Photoshop and OneNote. Users can also utilize the original Microsoft Surface Pen, ensuring compatibility across devices.
Battery Life
In our tests, the LCD version of the Surface Pro achieved a runtime of 7.15 hours while looping an HD YouTube video at maximum brightness, providing a reliable performance for daily tasks.
Charging is efficient, supporting at least 60 watts via Surface Connect or USB-C, with USB-C proving to be a convenient option.
