DroidDeck Brings SteamOS to Android Handhelds

DroidDeck: A New Way to Run Your Steam Library on Your Phone

Running your Steam library on a phone has always been a challenge, requiring emulation layers and workarounds. However, a new open-source project called DroidDeck is changing the game. Released on GitHub on 24 September, DroidDeck allows users to run Valve’s Steam client in Big Picture mode on Adreno Android devices and play Windows games through Valve’s ARM64 Proton.

What DroidDeck Actually Is

Unlike an emulator or streaming client, DroidDeck boots a Linux runtime on the device, installs Steam into it, and presents the Steam Deck’s interface, including the Quick Access Menu and per-game controls. Underneath, Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux, is used in its ARM64 form.

The Same App, Shipped Under Three Fake Names

DroidDeck distributes itself in a unique way, with version 0.3.0 shipping as four APK files, three of which carry the package names of other software such as PUBG Mobile and benchmarking apps. This is done to bypass certain restrictions on performance modes on certain phones.

Battery Life, Frame Generation, and Driver Swapping

The latest release of DroidDeck improves startup times, adds battery life reporting, and includes a GPU drivers tab for managing display drivers. It also introduces frame generation for smoother gameplay.

Which Hardware It Runs On

DroidDeck requires Android 9 or newer on an Adreno device at 730 or newer. It does not require root access and has specific requirements for storage space.

Controls and the Second Screen

DroidDeck supports various controller options and touch input, making it accessible on devices without a controller. Dual-screen devices can use the second display as back grips and trackpads.

Linux Apps and What Is Still Rough

Users can install ARM64 Linux apps and games from the Flathub Store and customize their desktop with additional software. However, there are limitations in compatibility and performance.

Why It Matters in the Philippines

In a country where gaming phones are popular, DroidDeck offers a unique way to enjoy Steam games on existing hardware. It provides a new perspective on gaming on the go and opens up possibilities for Filipino gamers.

Overall, DroidDeck is an innovative project that leverages existing hardware to bring PC gaming to mobile devices in a new and exciting way.
