In a significant shift for its game creation platform, s&box, Facepunch Studios is implementing a series of changes aimed at revitalizing user experience and addressing community concerns. Following its launch in April, the platform faced a wave of criticism, with users expressing dissatisfaction over the quality of AI-generated content and a noticeable decline in active players. In response, creator Garry Newman has announced a pivot towards a more player-centric model.
New Directions for User-Generated Content
Newman has revealed plans to introduce a ‘greenlight type system’ for user-generated games, which will allow for a more curated selection of content. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance the sandbox mode by incorporating additional NPCs, vehicles, and customization options. “I’ve let everyone down that was expecting that. I accept that, and I’m sorry—we are going to do better,” he stated, acknowledging the need for improvement.
Another critical aspect of the upcoming changes involves refining the process for discovering quality games. Newman candidly referred to the current state of the platform as having a “ton of shit games,” indicating a need for a more stringent curation process. The Play Fund pool will now require creators to apply for inclusion, rather than automatically granting funds based on popularity metrics. “Our new policy isn’t set in stone, but generally we want to discourage clickers, idler, slop, and UI-based games,” he explained. This initiative aims to elevate the overall quality of games available on the platform.
Transitioning to Free-to-Play
In a notable shift, s&box will transition to a free-to-play model before the end of 2026. For those who have already purchased the game, Newman assured that they would receive exclusive Steam inventory items as a token of appreciation, with additional rewards based on their purchase price. “I hope this will justify the purchase price,” he remarked, emphasizing the commitment to rewarding early supporters.
Additionally, the iconic character model known as “The Citizen” or “Terry” will be retired in favor of more generic human avatars. While the original model will still be available in games that utilize it, it will no longer be featured prominently in the menu or avatar editor, marking a significant visual update for the platform.
As Facepunch Studios embarks on this journey of transformation, the question remains: will these changes be sufficient to restore s&box to its intended glory? With a renewed focus on human curation and a commitment to enhancing player experience, the studio appears to be taking thoughtful steps toward a brighter future for its community. The hope is that these adjustments will recapture the essence that made the original Garry’s Mod a beloved classic.
