Performance Enhancements and New Rewards in Borderlands 4
Today marks a significant moment for players of Borderlands 4, as developer Gearbox rolls out its first update aimed at addressing the performance issues that have plagued the PC version of this eagerly anticipated looter shooter. Many players, myself included, have experienced a range of technical challenges, including texture pop-in, lag, frame rate drops, and occasional crashes. This patch represents Gearbox’s initial effort to tackle these concerns, and while it may not resolve every issue immediately, it certainly feels like a positive move forward.
Despite the rocky start, with the game receiving mixed reviews shortly after launch, there has been a slight uptick in user ratings, now hovering around 66% positive. However, the journey to shake off the ‘mixed’ rating on Steam is still ongoing. Personally, I find that, aside from the technical hiccups, Borderlands 4 has the potential to be one of the standout FPS games in recent years, rekindling my enthusiasm for the series reminiscent of its earlier titles.
In their announcement, Gearbox stated, “Today, we’re releasing a new update to help improve stability for a wide range of PCs.” After downloading the patch, I took the opportunity to test it across various missions and open-world scenarios. My initial experience showed a more stable frame rate, averaging between 50-60 fps, a welcome improvement from the previous dips into the 30s and 40s. However, with only about half an hour of playtime since the update, I remain cautious about drawing any definitive conclusions, as there is still work to be done.
Gearbox also emphasized the importance of shader recompilation whenever graphics settings are altered, which can take up to 15 minutes. While this requirement may complicate testing adjustments, I did notice a marked difference after allowing the process to complete. The developer reassured players that they are actively monitoring feedback and planning further updates, promising more details in the near future.
While the patch notes remain sparse, Gearbox has provided two guides featuring charts designed to optimize game settings for both Nvidia and AMD users. This guidance aims to help players maximize their gaming experience, regardless of whether they possess cutting-edge graphics cards or older models. Additionally, ensuring that your GPU drivers are up to date is crucial, and there are extra fixes available for those encountering issues with saved settings in Borderlands 4.
In an exciting bonus, Gearbox has introduced two new skins for the Break Free pack, available through Borderlands 4 Shift codes. These new looks, ‘Break Free’ and ‘Knox’ for the drone companion Echo-4, will be awarded based on the total carnage inflicted by players during the opening weekend. These additions complement the existing styles available for the four main characters and the ‘Firebreak’ legendary Ripper Shield.
For those yet to dive into the game, it’s advisable to carefully review the system requirements for Borderlands 4. For current players, understanding how the recent enhancements function and identifying the best options to utilize can greatly enhance the gameplay experience.
