ARMSX3 is here: PS3 emulation on Android just got more exciting

What’s it like to use ARMSX3?

Trying out the new PS3 emulator, ARMSX3, is an exciting venture for Android users. The emulator is a proof-of-concept port of the RPCS3 emulator, specifically tailored for Arm-based devices. This means that users can expect improved performance and compatibility in a range of games.

To get started with ARMSX3, users can download the emulator from GitHub and obtain the necessary PS3 firmware from Sony’s PlayStation website. However, it’s important to manage expectations as most games may not run smoothly or at all due to the experimental nature of the project. Additionally, users should be prepared for high device temperatures when engaging in PS3 emulation on Android.

The installation process for ARMSX3 is similar to its predecessors, ARMSX2 and ARMSX1. Users can select their desired install folder, choose the firmware file, and designate a ROM directory. The user interface is familiar, displaying the game library on the main screen.

While testing the emulator, I experimented with Skate 3, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and Catherine on a vivo X300 Ultra. Skate 3 experienced slow performance during the intro screens and froze before gameplay. 3D Dot Game Heroes had a mid-teen frame rate, making it less playable compared to RPCSX-UI Android. Catherine, on the other hand, ran at around 22fps, offering a playable experience due to the game’s puzzle-based nature. However, users with budget Android phones may not achieve satisfactory results with ARMSX3.

Despite some bugs like occasional crashes and screen stretching, ARMSX3 supports both virtual and physical controllers. Users can also explore various options such as resolution scaling, custom GPU driver support, and virtual controller configurations. With Arm-specific enhancements and a range of features, ARMSX3 presents a promising proof-of-concept project for PS3 emulation on Android.
