August is shaping up to be a relatively quiet month in the realm of video game launches, particularly when it comes to fresh titles. However, the month is unexpectedly bustling with remakes and remasters, which are set to dominate this segment of the summer. As someone who often pretends to rise above nostalgia, I must admit that I am a sucker for the beloved classics of yesteryears being repackaged and presented anew. This August promises a delightful feast, beginning with Dawn of War: Definitive Edition on August 14.
Grimdark never changes
Dawn of War holds a special place in my heart as a pivotal RTS, showcasing Relic’s ability to transition to 3D without compromising gameplay. The expansions further elevated the experience, introducing dynamic campaigns and a plethora of Warhammer 40k units. Design director Philippe Boulle expressed, “The fundamental game still works. That’s what we want to deliver.” The Definitive Edition promises a comprehensive package: all expansions and multiplayer modes unified under a single executable, enhanced textures with 4K support, improved lighting and reflections, camera adjustments, and a shift to 64-bit architecture, making it easier for modders to embark on ambitious projects.
Run for cover
Gears of War: Reloaded aims to rekindle the essence of the franchise that initially captivated audiences. While Gears of War has remained in the public consciousness, its relevance has waned over time. This remake seeks to polish the original title that laid the groundwork for a genre, albeit one that has seen its share of imitators. The remaster boasts significantly upgraded assets and lighting, bringing it closer to contemporary gaming standards. Players can expect cross-play, cross-progression, DLSS, HDR, and an optional streamlined control scheme, with all post-launch content included for free. The release is set for August 26.
Country life
For fans of life and farming simulations, Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, a remake of the Harvest Moon DS classic, will be available on August 27. While I may not typically gravitate towards this genre, the game promises a refreshing take on farm life, incorporating features that could set a new standard for future titles. As Kara notes in her preview, “Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar has given me a look at what streamlined farm life could look like,” suggesting it could easily become a time sink for players.
Undercover boss
The highlight of the month arrives on August 28 with the much-anticipated remake of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. This title stands out as one of the most intriguing entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. While I personally hold MGS2 in high regard, MGS3 is undeniably a masterpiece of ambition and storytelling. Delta represents Konami’s largest MGS endeavor since Hideo Kojima’s departure, and while there may be concerns, the remake can lean on Kojima’s original vision. This full remake is designed for a modern audience, introducing new features such as the Fox Hunt multiplayer mode and real-time wear and tear on characters, adding depth to the gameplay experience.
While August may not be bustling with new releases, it certainly offers a wealth of nostalgia-driven experiences. With titles like Dawn of War, Gears of War: Reloaded, Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, and the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid Delta, gamers have much to look forward to. Each title presents a unique interpretation of nostalgia, from the polished classics to innovative remakes, ensuring that this month is anything but dull.
