Dark Messiah of Might and Magic gets co-op mode and extra content thanks to the mod community’s collaboration with Ubisoft: ‘To see it all come together has been very emotional for us’

The modding community continues to astonish with its creativity and dedication, particularly in the realm of PC gaming. A notable example of this is the work of modder KingDavidW, who has taken a special interest in Arkane’s classic hack-and-slash title, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Recently, KingDavidW shared an extensive update on ModDB, highlighting a fruitful collaboration with Ubisoft, the game’s publisher, and Nvidia, which is paving the way for a range of new mods and tools for this beloved 2006 action game.

Collaboration and Community Growth

KingDavidW elaborated on the partnership with Ubisoft and Nvidia, emphasizing how this support has enabled the modding community to achieve unprecedented advancements. “The official support we’ve had from the Ubisoft and Nvidia partnership has allowed us to reach heights we never thought we could in our work here,” he noted. He expressed gratitude for the efforts of Ubisoft’s team, who have been instrumental in advocating for the community’s creative endeavors.

One of the standout projects is the “Dark Messiah: Restoration Mod.” Initially focused on fixing gameplay bugs—such as troublesome ropes and level soft-locks—this mod has evolved significantly. Thanks to Ubisoft’s provision of valuable assets from Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Element, the Xbox 360 version of the game, the Restoration Mod now includes:

  • Bonus missions
  • Alternate levels
  • A previously cut level known as The Caves
  • Several cut weapons, including the “Sword of Misery” and the “Necromancer Staff”

In addition to this exciting new content, Ubisoft is assisting the modders in developing an advanced SDK, with KingDavidW expressing optimism for a release in the coming months rather than later in the year.

Innovative Developments with Nvidia

While the specifics of Nvidia’s contributions remain somewhat ambiguous, it is likely linked to the ongoing development of the Dark Messiah RTX mod. This ambitious project requires extensive reworking of models and textures, a process that KingDavidW describes as time-consuming yet rewarding. A trailer showcasing the mod’s progress has already been released, offering a glimpse into the community’s hard work.

Moreover, the modding team has made strides toward a cooperative mod for Dark Messiah. Although still in the testing phase and not yet available on ModDB, this mod has been released on Github for public testing. KingDavidW mentioned that while the main issues have been addressed for a playable experience, further refinements are necessary to optimize the levels for cooperative gameplay. The prospect of engaging in co-op play, utilizing the game’s unique physics-based traps and spells, is certainly enticing.

As KingDavidW reflects on the journey, they express a sense of wonder at the community’s accomplishments. “To see it all come together has been very emotional for us,” they shared. “We’re walking into a new era for Dark Messiah.” The ongoing efforts of the modding community not only breathe new life into this classic title but also showcase the enduring passion of gamers dedicated to enhancing their experiences.
