Google introduces new developer tools and titles for games on mobile and PC

Google has unveiled an array of exciting features for both PC and mobile gaming, coinciding with the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC). These enhancements include new game titles, customizable controls, and robust developer tools aimed at facilitating the transition of mobile games to PC platforms.

Initially launched in beta in 2022, Google Play Games for PC has gradually expanded its reach across various regions. This year, the program is set to transition into general availability, marking a significant milestone for the platform.

Developer Tools

Among the notable updates is the introduction of a dedicated SDK tailored for native PC games on Google Play Games, which will incorporate in-app purchase capabilities. Additionally, the Play Console is being enhanced to streamline the distribution and management of multiple builds for both mobile and PC games.

In a move to broaden accessibility, Google plans to make all mobile games available on PC via the Play Store by default. Developers will have the option to opt out if they prefer. To help users identify optimized experiences, specially tuned games will feature an optimized icon, while others will carry a “playable” badge following testing.

Support for AMD-based laptops and desktops is also on the horizon, ensuring that Google Play Games on PC will be accessible from the start menu across a variety of manufacturers.

Furthermore, Google is introducing a new Graphics API named Vilkan, designed to enhance frame rates and visual fidelity, alongside the implementation of ray tracing technology. The Android Dynamic Performance Framework (ADPF) is also receiving improvements to ensure more responsive gameplay.

Later this year, developers will gain the ability to launch user acquisition campaigns for both mobile emulated and native PC titles within Google Play Games for PC. Additionally, game creators will have the opportunity to port their titles to the Google Play for PC program, potentially earning up to 15% in additional revenue.

New Game Titles

During GDC, Google announced a selection of new PC-optimized titles, including “Game of Thrones: Kingsroad,” “Sonic Rumble,” and “ODIN: VALHALLA RISING.” Thanks to the mobile games porting feature, users will soon be able to enjoy “Train Sim” and “Pet Shop Fever: Animal Hotel” on their PCs.

In an intriguing twist, Google is also bringing several PC titles to mobile, with “DREDGE” and “TABS Mobile” set to launch on Google Play this month. The highly anticipated mystery game “Disco Elysium” will follow later this year.

User-Facing Features

To enhance the gaming experience, Google is introducing customizable controls for PC games, allowing players to remap controls to suit their preferences. Later this month, a game sidebar will be rolled out, enabling quick adjustments and supporting multi-account functionality.

Additionally, tracking and utilizing Play Points on PC will become more straightforward, with Google promising up to 10x points boosters for purchases, further enriching the user experience.
