GSD & GfK: PC/Console game sales in Europe increased by 20% in September’24

In the dynamic landscape of gaming, recent sales figures reveal a notable surge in game sales coinciding with new releases. Last month, Europe witnessed the sale of 17.6 million PC and console games, marking a 20% increase compared to September 2023. This uptick underscores the industry’s resilience and the excitement that new titles can generate among consumers.

Game Sales

  • Leading the charge, EA Sports FC 25 emerged as the top seller, although its launch figures were 2% lower than its predecessor. Interestingly, sales of the premium version of the game saw a 10% increase from last year, suggesting that EA may have capitalized on higher revenue despite the initial dip.
  • The Crew 2 secured the second spot, largely thanks to a promotional offer that priced the game at just €1.
  • In third place, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 not only ranked highly in the new game sales chart but also became the fastest-selling title in its franchise’s history in Europe, surpassing other anticipated releases like Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

New entries into the top ten also showcased impressive performances:

  • Astro Bot had a remarkable debut, with launch sales 34% higher than Sonic Frontiers and 52% better than Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. It even outperformed Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart by 7.5%.
  • NBA 2K25 saw a 1% increase in sales compared to its predecessor, while The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom debuted with physical sales 15% lower than the 2019 remake of Link’s Awakening, although digital sales are expected to have risen significantly.
  • Meanwhile, Harry Potter Quidditch Champions made its entrance at the 28th position.

Hardware Sales

  • On the hardware front, September saw the sale of 335,000 consoles in Europe, an 18% decline from the previous year.
  • The PS5 maintained its lead, despite a 17% drop in sales year-on-year. The Nintendo Switch followed closely, enjoying a modest 1.5% increase, while the Xbox Series S|X experienced a significant downturn, with sales plummeting by 58% compared to September 2023.
  • Accessory sales also reflected a slight decline, with 1.1 million units sold, down 2.4% from last year. The DualSense controller emerged as a best-seller in this category.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, these figures highlight the interplay between new releases and consumer engagement, painting a vivid picture of a sector that remains vibrant and full of potential.
