After a long day, immersing oneself in the world of gaming can be a delightful escape. For many, creating an optimal gaming environment is just as important as the games themselves. Over the past year, I have made several upgrades to my gaming setup, from selecting the perfect gaming chair to investing in a high-refresh rate monitor. However, it was my experience with the Secretlab Magnus Pro desk that inspired me to establish a dedicated gaming space.
Measuring 60 inches across and 27 inches deep, this desk features built-in cable management, making it the perfect foundation for my gaming sanctuary. Following my upgrade to the Xbox Series X, I replaced my 27-inch monitor with a larger 32-inch model and added a Secretlab desk riser for additional storage. Yet, one crucial element was still missing: proper lighting. While I initially enjoyed the Quntis RGB Pro+ monitor light bar for late-night gaming sessions, a visit to CES in January introduced me to an even more exciting solution.
So much more than a lightstrip
The Govee AI Sync Box 2 is a game-changer for those looking to sync their gaming experience with smart lighting. Available as a standalone unit with a single lightstrip, it truly shines when purchased as a kit. This kit includes not only a lightstrip but also two light bars designed to flank your monitor. While it can be used with a TV, the included lightstrip is specifically tailored for 27-34 inch monitors, with separate options available for larger screens.
The kit comes complete with the AI Sync Box itself and two braided HDMI 2.1 cables, essential for connecting to the Xbox Series X, PS5, or even the upcoming PS5 Pro, ensuring high frame rates during gameplay. The AI Sync Box 2 is equipped with ample ports, featuring four HDMI inputs and an output, alongside two USB-C ports for powering the lightstrip and light bars. This thoughtful design allows for simultaneous connections to multiple devices such as an Xbox, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and a gaming PC.
What sets the AI Sync Box 2 apart is its advanced technology. It incorporates a neural processing unit (NPU) that analyzes incoming HDMI signals to detect colors and patterns, adjusting the connected lights in real-time for a seamless visual experience. Unlike other lighting kits that rely on camera setups, this dedicated sync box offers faster response times and more accurate color matching.
Some assembly required
Setting up the AI Sync Box 2 was straightforward. The light bars come with circular stands that require a bit of assembly, but the adhesive strip on their base simplifies the process. The lightstrip, divided into four sections, attaches to the back of the monitor, providing a clean and organized look. Govee even supplies clips for securing the lightstrip, ensuring it remains firmly in place.
As I arranged my cables, I was mindful of the lightstrip’s hard-wired USB-C power cable, which necessitated careful planning to avoid any snags. With the light bars assembled and the lightstrip attached, it was time to power everything up and dive into gaming.
The new centerpiece of my gaming setup
Initially, I positioned the AI Sync Box 2 beneath my desk shelf, but after some rearranging, I opted for a more efficient setup using the Genki Covert Dock Mini for my Nintendo Switch. The light bars and lightstrip create a stunning visual effect, with the left and right sides of the screen syncing beautifully with the corresponding light bars. For added ambiance, I also incorporated a Razer Aether Light Bar and a Creative Sound Blaster GS3 soundbar, enhancing both the lighting and audio experience.
The AI Sync Box 2 not only looks great but also features intuitive controls. The front light changes color and position to indicate which HDMI input is currently active, providing a user-friendly experience. Additionally, the Govee logo on the light bars syncs with the content on the screen, adding an extra layer of immersion.
Adding another dimension to my favorite games
Testing the Govee AI Sync Box 2 with colorful games like Metaphor ReFantazio showcased its capabilities. The vibrant hues from the game reflected beautifully on the surrounding lights, enhancing the overall experience. The loading screens, known for their vivid colors, created an electrifying atmosphere, with the lights responding dynamically to the game’s visuals.
Similarly, playing Rocket League demonstrated the AI Sync Box 2’s ability to adapt to various color schemes, with the snowy field’s whites and blues translating seamlessly to the lighting effects. The device also performed well with my Nintendo Switch, though I look forward to further testing once the anticipated Switch 2 is released.
Room to grow
The AI Sync Box 2 is just the beginning. Govee’s DreamView-compatible lights can be easily integrated into the setup, allowing for further customization and expansion. The NPU offers exciting possibilities, enabling the lights to react to gameplay elements, such as health indicators or significant in-game events. With over 40 games currently supported, the potential for enhanced gaming experiences is vast.
As I continue to refine my gaming setup, the AI Sync Box 2 stands out as a versatile and innovative addition. With its ample ports and compatibility with various devices, it opens the door to endless possibilities for future enhancements. Now, as I prepare to dive into my next gaming adventure, I look forward to syncing my lights for an even more immersive experience.
