In a surprising turn of events, Hytale has been revived under the full ownership of Hypixel, following its cancellation by Riot Games. This marks a significant milestone for a project that many believed had been shelved indefinitely after a decade of development.
On June 23, 2025, Riot Games announced the cessation of Hytale’s development and the gradual winding down of Hypixel Studios. The decision came after ten years of dedicated effort to bring the Minecraft-inspired sandbox game to life.
In response to the community’s outcry, Hypixel’s founders, Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette, took the initiative to repurchase the rights to Hytale. The acquisition was made without a complete understanding of the existing codebase, but it has allowed the project to become fully independent, free from any external investors or publishers.
Hytale lives on after Hypixel acquires game rights
With the acquisition finalized, Hypixel has already welcomed back over 30 former developers from the Hytale team and has committed personal funding for the next decade to realize the game’s original vision.
Looking ahead, Hypixel plans to announce an early access release date in November. Players should prepare for a version of Hytale that is still in its infancy, complete with bugs, unbalanced content, and regular updates that may disrupt gameplay.
In a post on X, co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme expressed his excitement, stating, “We did it. Hytale is saved. We have acquired Hytale from Riot Games.” He emphasized that players will no longer have to wait, as they will soon be able to experience the game, albeit with its imperfections.
Frequent updates, transparent patch notes, and active community involvement will be central to Hytale’s development moving forward. Hypixel has chosen to keep the team intentionally small to facilitate rapid iteration and responsiveness to player feedback.
As Hytale embarks on a multi-year early access cycle, it aims to evolve through the contributions and insights of its community, with a decade of funding already secured to support this ambitious journey.
