Steam Next Fest: A Diverse Showcase of Gaming Innovation
The millionth Steam Next Fest of the year is drawing to a close, but there’s no need for concern; it will return before you can even think about uninstalling all the demos. A glance at the charts might initially evoke a sense of disappointment, especially for those weary of the multiplayer genre dominating the scene. However, a deeper look reveals an intriguing variety that highlights the unpredictable nature of PC gaming.
At the forefront is the revival of the classic tactical shooter, Delta Force, which has transformed into a modern PvP experience. Originally launched in the late ’90s, Delta Force was a cornerstone of the tactical FPS genre, and many gamers, including myself, spent countless hours navigating its arid landscapes to rescue POWs and engage in explosive missions. While the genre may not be my current preference—after all, how many camouflaged protagonists can one endure?—its unexpected resurgence at the top of the charts is oddly comforting. This reboot stands out not merely as another entry in the crowded multiplayer arena; it offers a unique blend of nostalgia and innovation, steering clear of the prevalent roguelite and survival game trends that often dominate the top ten.
Following closely is Supervive, a title that has garnered attention despite the prevailing notion that MOBAs are on the decline. While stalwarts like League of Legends and Dota 2 continue to thrive, Supervive’s rise is noteworthy, especially given the early buzz surrounding Deadlock. This game seems to echo the mid-2010s era when developers were racing to create their own MOBA or hero shooter, reminiscent of titles like Battleborn. Its unexpected popularity in 2024 certainly wasn’t on anyone’s Steam Next Fest bingo card, particularly in a landscape where battle royale games have solidified their dominance.
Next up is Strinova, which initially appeared to be a flashy anime-inspired take on Valorant. However, its standout feature—the ability to toggle between 3D and 2D forms—adds a fascinating twist to the gameplay. While it shares some tactical elements with Delta Force, the contrast between serious military operations and vibrant anime aesthetics is striking.
The list continues with Rivals of Aether 2, where charming creatures engage in combat; Popucom, a match-3 platformer that may not appeal to everyone but could resonate with younger audiences; Fast Food Simulator, a co-op drudgery simulation; and Gladio Mori, a melee fighter that, despite its unappealing visuals, boasts intriguing mechanics like organ-specific damage and customizable fighting styles.
As Halloween approaches, KLETKA deserves a mention. This co-op survival horror game, with its PS1-era aesthetic, draws clear inspiration from Lethal Company. Players navigate a vast, living gigastructure filled with traps and anomalies, all while avoiding a relentless entity. The concept of an alive, hungry elevator adds a unique layer of tension, making its December launch a missed opportunity for the spooky season.
While many of the chart-toppers may not align with my personal tastes, the diversity of games capturing players’ attention is commendable. This eclectic mix, which strays from rigid trends, underscores the vibrant nature of the gaming community. Although familiar genres like tactical shooters and MOBAs dominate, the fresh approaches taken by these titles offer a refreshing perspective.
Regarding the multiplayer phenomenon, it’s essential to recognize that these games are inherently more demo-friendly. Their match-based structure allows players to quickly grasp the mechanics, in contrast to single-player experiences that require a more significant time investment to appreciate their narratives and characters. While I typically shy away from single-player demos unless necessary for work, the charts reveal that there are still notable single-player titles gaining traction, such as the cop sandbox game The Precinct and the narrative-driven Sultan’s Game.
In summary, the Steam Next Fest has once again showcased the remarkable variety within the gaming industry, inviting players to explore new and unexpected experiences. As we reflect on this event, it’s worth considering which demos captured your interest this time around.
