Nvidia GPUs are broken in one of the most demanding new PC games, says developer

Nvidia users have found themselves navigating a challenging landscape recently, marked by driver updates and compatibility issues with various games. The latest development comes from Rogue Factor, which has just released a demo for its upcoming open-world action title, Hell is Us, built on the cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5. Shortly after the demo’s launch, the developer issued a cautionary note on Steam, alerting players with Nvidia’s RTX 40-series and 50-series GPUs about potential crashes upon launching the game. Users are advised to “reduce your graphics settings” prior to entering the game to mitigate these issues.

Hell is Us demo crashing on Nvidia GPUs

Rogue Factor is actively working on a patch for the Hell is Us demo, and with the game’s official release scheduled for September 4, there remains ample time to address these concerns. Interestingly, the developer has suggested a temporary workaround: before starting the game, users should lower their graphics settings and disable all upscaling and frame generation options. Once players gain control of their characters, they can adjust the graphics settings without fear of crashing—a claim supported by firsthand experiences from those who have tried the demo.

This situation echoes previous instances where developers of titles like InZoi and The First Berserker: Khazan recommended that Nvidia users roll back their driver installations to resolve performance issues. Since the introduction of the RTX 50-series GPUs, Nvidia has faced ongoing challenges with driver stability. A series of unresolved bugs prompted an investigation by Gamer’s Nexus, which characterized the recent driver releases as “absolutely abhorrent.”

While the specific cause of the crashing in Hell is Us has yet to be confirmed, it is tentatively believed to be linked to the driver, particularly affecting RTX 40-series and 50-series GPUs. The issue appears to be associated with Nvidia’s DLSS technology, which has previously been implicated in similar crashes across various games. The developer has not ruled out the possibility that the new DLSS overrides in the Nvidia application, which allow for the integration of the latest Transformer model and Multi-Frame Generation (MFG) into non-native games, may be contributing to the problem.

Despite the workaround, players may still need to rely on upscaling and frame generation to achieve a playable frame rate in Hell is Us. The developer’s system requirements indicate that an RTX 4090 is necessary for 4K gameplay at 30 frames per second (fps), even with upscaling enabled. For those aiming for 60 fps at 1080p, the recommendation is an RTX 2080 Ti, a significant investment for gamers.
